Callum Wilson: offered 'incentive-based' contract extension (Ornstein)

Recommended Posts

Wilson should have been sold last year, never mind let go now, and even more bizarre to give him another year.

Surely he goes and secures a two year contract with another team.

Very interested to see what our transfer plans and policy is, cause at the moment I haven’t got the foggiest.

Wilson on a pay as you play contract is basically him hanging around spreading some joy in the physio room and cafeteria. If his base salary is on the Ruddy level it’s probably worth it.

He’d be mad to sign something like that though

Lot of copium going about in here but moves like extending Wilson's contract scream inability/unwillingness to be ruthless in the transfer market to me.

I hope (based on no evidence) that we're aggressively chasing free and low cost deals as a priority, to replace the Wilsons of this world, then some purples to strengthen the first XI.

The thing with a Jonathon David or Angel Gomes, you can go on about whether they're a perfect fit or how their wages are high, but in a PSR world I struggle to see how signing a good player for free is bad. The day after you sign them you have a 30m player you didn't have yesterday.

I'm concerned Eddie doesn't have an elite attitude towards transfers. Get the pitchforks out, I said it.

I can kind of see it if we are either looking at loaning Osula out or using him more in wide areas for now.

And maybe we go for a younger rotation striker we like, but who may need a bit of time to acclimate to the Prem.

And so maybe the option of Wilson for a bit of physicality and making a nuisance of himself is deemed worthwhile?

Like others have mentioned though, he's going to want to play and so may not accept that.

Hard to say really.

He had half a season to do that in the campaign just finished and barely caused a ripple. We really needed the odd goal and assist when Isak was struggling and he just made no impact. He's just a body now, he doesn't really offer anything other than taking up a squad space.

Gomes is off to Marseille and David to Napoli.

I agree with this in general, but with Wilson the horse has already bolted. We should have sold him earlier, but at this stage our options are basically:

Buy a 3rd choice striker.

Don't have a 3rd choice striker.

Give Wilson an extension on lower

wages.

Yeah, he only had 370 minutes in the league though. And quite a few of those were coming on when we were 2 or three goals up and not even trying to attack. Going essentially the equivalent of 4 or 5 games without a goal is hardly that worrying.

Plus another 103 mins in the cups with one goal. So he played basically just over 5 games, with one goal.

It's his availability that's the main concern for me. He's obviously not going to be quite the player he was after all the injuries, but personally I think people are overstating his decline.

I'd have no problem with him getting a deal heavily incentivised on him not falling apart, particularly if we have extra cover via a RW who can cover CF or if Howe decides it's now time to give people a proper taste of Big Willy.

Football is fickle. 1 goal all season is what people will see.

Problem is Wilson is past it and Osula isn't ready to be 2nd choice, at least in Eddie's view. So we need to bring in a good back up to Isak.

If we stick with Wilson, you could only put that down to deluded stubbornness on Eddie's part.

I just don’t understand how anyone at the club could have watched him the last year or so, and thought he deserves a new contract.

He'll not be getting the £80k or so he's on now as first back up to Isak so I don't think we view it as that. If he's happy to go on to a Dummett/Ritchie style wage further down the pecking order and as long as he's not eating up someone else's spot in the squad, I'm not too arsed.

This was the last bit of transfer/contract news I, and I guess most others, were expecting.

Hoping it fits into some bigger picture, and we do not end up at any point having to rely upon a player who's body gave up on him a long time ago.

If he's been offered a contract it means we aren't gonna be bringing in a new striker.

Wilson will be wanting game time so osula will be missing out again I imagine.

Unless Osula has been promoted to number two and Wilson is the back up just like Lascelles.

Then Wilson wouldn't sign the deal he is that type of fella.

We all are sick of players that we can't shift in the transfer window the likes of miggy Lewis Hayden Hendrick etc then we finally get the chance to let Wilson go and we offer him a contract. 😂
