Callum Wilson set to be out for around 8 weeks with new hamstring injury (Howe)

We all know Gayle should be the 1 playing instead of Wilson. The way we've played over the last few games has been all about movement and pressing. Gayle is the only option available so we can carry on with the same system.

So obviously it'll be Joelinton or Carroll.

Why do people make out Gayle's lazy exactly?

He isn’t lazy, just absolutely shite in that sort of role. He needs service into the box. He’s got literally none of the abilities required to run the channels other than a bit of pace.

he's not great but he's the best we have apart from wilson.

Oh, I don’t doubt that at all.

Got to be Gayle but it’ll be Jo. We need goals and a strikers movement, we’re in serious trouble if that responsibility goes to Jo.

I’m not so sure. We carried him last season and got by. We wouldn’t have to change the system. He’d still be poor but at least we wouldn’t have to go route one. Not sure on Gayle as the wide striker like Wilson’s been the last 3 games but would be adequate too.

Could you ever see Jo make the move and finish Gayle did against WBA? He ain’t great but he’s clearly a much better striker than Jo will ever be. Gayle will need a bit more support than Wilson does but it is what it is and he’ll score more than Jo.

We need 5 wins or so, there’s no way Jo can score the necessary goals.

Others can.  Gayle has been here 5 years and other than half a season in the championship he's offered nothing.  Plus probably be injured after a couple of games.  Anderson might be worth a game

Well this is a mess ...

I guess if Joe is ever to make anything of himself here this is going to be his last chance, with him getting a run in this new setup.

If he looks bad with us lined up the way we have recently then that will all be down to him, as the setup should put him in the best position to be more productive.

I agree but he doesn’t even have the application or desire to do well

Well it's going to be his last chance really and it's all down to him.

Everyone has looked better in the recent setup and particularly the players further up the pitch, and so he just has to produce much better performances.

If he doesn't then it will be 100% clear that he has to be moved on once the season is up.

Why are you even contemplating this?  One more chance? You simply have to be kidding........

Because he hasn't played in this setup yet and he cost us £40 million. It's the sensible thing to do.

We're pretty much safe and it's a nothing season. Playing Gayle and Carroll who are going to be out of contract makes no sense.

The team has seen a significant improvement since the change in system, so it makes more sense to see what the 23 year old player that cost £40 million can do in the setup.

At the very least it gets him a run of games to perhaps garner some interest from teams in lesser leagues for next season.

Playing Gayle and Carroll ahead of him would be very short sighted. If Joe really stinks and the team is struggling to pick up points you can always pull him out and make the change then.

Also ... if Joe comes in and looks even half decent it will be yet another thing that makes Steve Bruce look an even bigger wally.

Jo won't score the goals, but if we are pressing higher up the pitch he could lay the ball off for Miggy, Max or Fraser. Also you have to factor in that we now have Willock arriving from midfield so you need someone who can hold the ball up. Scoring goals won't be quite as important if we can get the other forwards making runs.

That said, I already said Gayle should be given first shot at it as he can get in goal scoring positions himself. Only one I don't want to see starting is Carroll because then we will just end up lumping it high and we'll get fuck all joy from that.

Love it when people say “play x upfront”, purely because they’re one of our best players. They do actually have to be suited (or able) to play in the position you want to hoy them into. Being fast isn’t the only attribute they need.

It has to be Gayle. Joe isn’t a striker and Carroll barely is.
