On that Wilson clip above, was this just after they made it 4-3?

I just remember when he broke shouting at the TV for him to take it to the corner, didn't see Gordon myself at all.

However, its not something I've seen our players do for years now, in fact the last player I remember doing it was Shearer. Final minutes in a tight match, he'd always try to take it to their corner and keep it there to run the clock down. Players these days always seem to want to try and score that one more.

Or he's just rusty and needs more than 15 mins off the bench to get up to speed? The extremes this board will go to at times [emoji38]

Nah.  I thought he looked past it most of last season when he was fit, even.  He is now rarely fit, so he won't get a run of games.  He can't get a run of games to build back up unless god forbid, Isak gets injured.  Plus, as already stated.  He also won't get a run of games due to being a perma-crock.  Bit of a cop out and all.  He has been back training for long enough, I'm sure.  As there is no way we would be risking him too early.  He got best part of an hour in the cup and then his few cameos here and there.

He was still quick when he first signed for us, but that's totally gone now.  It's not like he has a great touch or anything and ever contributed much to overall play.  He's always been more of a poacher, between the posts type, that occasionally loves to shithouse and get in battles with CB's.  But again, I don't think he has that in his game now, as his body just gives up all the while.

He's been a great player for us over the years.  But I think it's fairly clear injuries have got the better of him and he should have been moved on if we had a chance to.

Again - give him more than 15 mins of match play before saying he's finished at the top level?

He scored 10 goals last season as a back-up striker so it's very odd to reference last season and say that he looked past it.

Perhaps ‘this level’ as in the entire prem was a tad strong. Say our level, then.

Can he play regularly, stay fit and perform to the levels required for a team whose ambition is the top 4 and perhaps more? I’d say no.

He barely gets ‘more than 15 minutes’ here and there. As the fucker is never fit and it’s always as if he is working his way back to fitness after yet another injury. He’s not good enough to spell Isak and start games. As we found out last season when he looked miles off the pace and just doing doggies up top chasing shadows. So he’ll get the odd cup game. Or he’ll play too often when Isak is injured and then break down again.

Yeah. He chipped in with some goals. Not sure that part of his game will ever fully desert him if get gets the service. But did you watch him last season when he was actually available and think he did a good job?

He will always be capable of getting goals and I think I’ve even said in here that as a bit part player. You would like to think he can chip in with goals here and there to help us to end the season. ‘IF’ he can stay fit.

Which is half why I’m surprised someone lower down in the league or abroad didn’t take a punt on him and/or we didn’t consider trying to move him on whilst he still held some value.

Makes for grim reading. Can’t be relied upon at all for any meaningful minutes or over a prolonged amount of time.

He scored 3 goals after october. This season he has 1 goal. So 4 goals in 1 year and 4 months.

We were talking about last season. Where he scored 10 goals. Not sure why goals before November don't count.

Yeah I fully agree with all of that. He's clearly not reliable enough any more for a club with top 4 ambitions. But I don't think he is done at PL level generally.

For some reason I'll have to remind you that we're having a discussion about how much he can contribute today. Why are you using goals mainly scored in 2023 as an argument? Him scoring 4 goals in the last 1 year and 4 months is 10x more relevant to the discussion than the 7 goals he scored from aug to nov 2023.. But hey, lets forget all the context and try to push an agenda instead.

He’s been ineffectual in general play for years. Absolutely sick of the sight of him TBH.

Let him go in the summer then.  If he’s so shot, Howe should play Osula instead.

Hes always been injury prone. If the club renew him that’s up to them, they knew the risks. Don’t see why he should be disrespected.

Don't think he's being disrespected is he? People just don't want to see him on the pitch. He'll be remembered fondly as one of our best ever strikers (imo) but he's finished now (again, imo).

He backed himself to score. That’s why he’s had the goal scoring record he has. It was the wrong decision but there’s been plenty of times hes backed himself to score and in doing so won us points. I’d have been fuming if it had cost us on Saturday, but beyond it being frustrating in the game context it’s not indicative of anything.

The frustrating thing for me is that he has played the square ball to a better placed player several times over the years including in the World Cup when England were miles ahead so would have excusable to choose the greedy option, seemed like one of the first times he's put self before team...

Probs just instinct though after the long lay offs and we still won so hey ho

This is where I am with him.

It is almost sad that he has stayed here too long.  A bit like other players from fairly recently.  Almiron, Ritchie and someone else who I've forgotten.  Gayle, perhaps?  They end up tarnishing their reputation a bit with the fans a bit by hanging around, even when they're miles past their best.

Not their fault at all, of course.  The club have decided to keep them or failed to shift them and they're under contract.  But it is still how a lot of people view it and then recency bias clouds your judgement.

Wilson remains the second best ‘traditional’ no. 9 I’ve seen in B&W (Isak isn’t an old school CF, and Shearer obviously was better).  Might not be a popular view, but I’d stick him above Ferdinand, Ba, Quinn etc in my lifetime.  Without the injuries he’d have been an incredible centre forward - in his pomp for us, his strength, power and finishing was first rate.  He’s probably the best I’ve seen at one on ones - the man has a very cool head (and a handsome one to boot).

Like others have said, sadly he’s probably been here a little longer than he should have.  But we’re in a cup final and might even reach another one this season - I wouldn’t write off him coming off the bench and grabbing a vital goal just yet and signing off in style.

I still love the bloke tbh (can you tell?).

Agree, thought he's looked generally decent in the cameos he's played as a sub, he's getting into goal scoring positions, and he was never much more than a goal scorer anyway. Still good to have him as an option, but he's not ever going to be much use on the counter.

He's had more impact for us than Ferdinand, and Ba to be fair.

I adored Ba though. Just a genuinely incredible striker. Wish we'd had him a lot longer.

Ba was fantastic, very underrated in England because his career was kind of short over here. Look at the goals he scored for us, think he probably could do just about everything, good in the air and with his feet. Even cracked a decent free kick which we didn't see enough of IMO, although we did have Cabaye on hand as well.
