Sad times, looked a great player and was supposed to be an incredible bloke.

Met him once. About 2009 in the bar of Northenden Golf Club. I had just played a round with a young lad from work (scratch golfer) who was a Man Utd fan.
Denis was good company and very good with his clearly awe struck fan boy. RIP.

Northenden GC? That’s my local course. What were you doing there?

Remember the Blyth cup match at St James's against Wrexham and subsequently buying their striker Alan Shoulder. RIP.

What a night that was. I must have been about 10. The atmosphere was something else.

Remember queuing up to get into East Stand paddock and someone opened fire doors and everyone dived in for a freebie. I was 13.

Haha I do remember it was absolutely rammed like. Alan Shoulder was great for us too. Worked his socks off and had an eye for goal. Probably the start of my love/hate relationship with Newcastle.

42K for Blyth v Wrexham! Mad. And mad to think Blyth were so close to the FA cup quarter finals. I couldn't get in that night and was gutted.

Think we were getting circa 24k crowds and that was by far the biggest at SJP that year.

As a young lad of 12, I entered a competition in the programme to name your favourite player and why, in thirty words or less.

I wrote a gushing eulogy to Alan Shoulder and got part of my entry printed in the next edition.

Still pisses me off that the winner used "1000" as one word, where "one thousand" would have taken their entry to thirty one words and therefore would have been disqualified.

Robbed.

RIP Alan.

I was a member for a few years; two spells, last ending 2020. My former garden backed into what used to be the  second tee (…before they built the M60!)

Yes he was a pitman and footballer for Blyth Spartans at the time.

Thanks.  I think I remember seeing an interview with him, might have been on the official history dvd or something, where he was talking about getting signed by us and travelling up to St James on the bus with the fans on match days or such like.  Changed times......

Remember getting his autograph when he was watching a game at Blackhall Welfare, I must have been about 10 so pretty much at the time he joined us, no recollection of the game but he had a canny sheepskin on. 🙂

RIP Alan.

Blowing my mind here, brother. I very nearly owned a house on Chretien Road a couple of years back which I assume once backed onto it before the sellers pulled out and we had to go with our second choice a few hundred yards away.

Oh and if it was you, I no longer think you’re a twat. :aww:

I really liked living there (wasn’t me by the way!). Kids all born there and went to NCS.
