Sidebar: The depth of this generation is far greater than that one. You had Vassell and Crouch off the bench for those lot. I also think they get a bad rap. They lost to genuinely good teams each time. An all-time great forward line Brazil and Portugal's Golden Gen.

That gen was a better manager and fortuitous draws away from SF's and Finals. Thems the lines.

Not having that like, we all saw with our own eyes how bad most of the players were compared to how they were for their clubs. 2002 granted, but Euro 2004 was the only other tournament in which they played anywhere near the level they were known for at their clubs, and that was a lot to do with Rooney coming on the scene. 2006 was when most of them were peaking for their clubs, 2008 they didn't even qualify and 2010 was a joke, Wayne Rooney our supposed jewel in the crown was literally (as in statistically) the worst player at the 2010 World Cup. They were all famously a huge disappointment of an England team for a reason.

The 'bigger than the sum of its parts' factor is a new thing with England and that's something that's largely credited to Ashworth for being the architect of through the different age groups.

England even in qualifying were often gash, we could barely compete with smaller Nations at keeping the ball despite the obvious talent and several players of that era have since said the dressing room spirit was non existent with club cliques evident and petty rivalries.

Players were picked mainly based on playing for one of the so-called big four and outside of that thre was this huge scattergun approach to selection that saw some downright non entities get capped and don’t get me started on friendlies or post Sven, the managerial appointments prior to Southgate.

Today England - the entire set-up - which starts at Grassroots right up to the senior team, in terms of scouting, all age groups, coaching, training and actual games, friendlies and official fixtures, has totally transformed from that era today and that’s largely down to the likes of Ashworth.

His effect has had a snowball effect on the grassroots amateur game too especially at kids’ level, where some clubs are ran like academies or team England, with young coaches who were once just dads all over the country attaining UEFA B level even and kids starting out at 7 becoming coaches themselves, or physios or scouts when they hit their teens or adulthood.

As others have mentioned, he isn’t responsible or ever will be for scouting players, his job is to build a structure that encompasses all of that and a whole lot more with people like himself, educated, knowledgeable, experienced and full of ability, operating within all aspects of the club, from top to bottom. The academy, the senior team, the ladies team, the scouting, the medical side, sports science, data, coaching etc.

Had incorrectly not included Rice or Trippier. So aye, 4/11.

I can’t answer that question though as I know very little about Ashworth tbh  was only responding to that point specifically.

Trippier's a bit of a stretch, was at City from 1999 & effectively left the club in 2010, long before they had an elite academy. I'd give him 3/11.

This appointment if it happens will be like laying the first foundations to what will become an elite level football club and operations in due course.

Agree with TCD. A credible candidate, a good appointment by all accounts, who will hopefully set us along the road we're all hoping to travel, but it's not an elite hire as I would define it. Hopefully he has the quality to help fulfil our medium to long term ambitions as well as our more immediate ones, it's certainly a huge opportunity for him in that respect.

He will become an elite DOF here, and he will help transform us into an elite club!

Potter is a manager who will only get better with time imo. His style of football isn't really suited to a midtable side, he needs players who are comfortable dominating games. If Brighton's player quality continues upwards I think he'll flourish.

If Pep took over a side like Brighton you'd probably be seeing a lot of high possession stats and draws.

Would take Potter over Howe if I could choose.

Absolutely love this potential appointment. Gardening leave thing is a bit weird though? Assuming he wants time to mentally refresh, get himself/family moved up north etc.

We need someone starting 3 months ago rather than in the summer though. Assume he will be starting at least mentally before May?

The gardening leave isn't down to him. It will be a 3 month notice period, and he would have been put on gardening leave instead of working it.

Gotcha. What's the point in it then? It says he will hand over all duties this week, so he is done from a Brighton perspective. They just want to inconvenience to us by having him unable to start for 3 months? Or just some sort of standard practice for these type of positions? Flooding back, wasn't it similar with Overmars when we were linked before Christmas?
