I think that’s the most frustrated I’ve been watching us under Howe. I love him and if he ever goes it should be on his own terms imo, but if he doesn’t come up with an in possession plan then he ultimately won’t keep his job for that long. This is a very expensive football team that is unbelievable out of possession but looks all too often like a relegation candidate with the ball in more or less all phases of the game.

Need to amend our "no arseholes" policy. Togetherness and work-rate only gets you so far. We have a lot of nice lads in the squad, but no real winners who'll demand a performance. Isak is a rat, but sometimes stone-cold elites with no heart are needed pull the level up to match them.

I have been on various internet sports forums for the better part of three decades, and I have to say, this is the first time I've seen the "we need to sign more players of poor character" take

Thats never been his style though. We see games out - out of possession. And we create chances largely based on our of possession pressing. It’s worked for us but we aren’t doing it well at the moment.

We also can’t defend well if the press doesn’t work. Previously we could grind out clean sheets

I do wonder if he is persisting with this sit back routine when we go ahead to get us through it with a win or two and build confidence defensively.

We were extremely good defensively in his first full season and I wonder if that is the aim. Grab a lead and hold onto it, issue being we cannot hold a fart in at the moment but he’s hoping when we do, it’ll start to click.

Thing is… the style is the same but we are doing it badly.

Today we won and showed some of that grit we’ve been missing.

I do think we are in need of a tactical tweak or something that gives us a new lease of life.  We look second best physically too often.

I didn’t see any grit, we were carved open time after time in the second half and it was only due to lack of quality on their part that we didn’t concede.

I don’t fully agree. Agreed that we’ve always prioritised out of possession work to great effect but imo we are still as effective at that.

We haven’t been this bad in our build up phase ever, and the players haven’t ever looked as poor technically as they have this season.

Well done to him on getting a much needed away win. Tonight was definitely one where the result was more important than the performance.

That said, the same problems were evident - sitting back and conceding shit loads of chances, midfield being ran through at will, not changing anything whilst we look like conceding at any given moment. We were lucky Burnley are shit & we probably go 2-2 against most other teams in the division playing the way we did.

Problem 1: the midfield led by the woefully out of form Italian. The best fix for this would be Miley, but he’s our RB so I don’t know.

We “sit back” in many cases because we can’t keep the ball. So many moments where we just concede possession.

Problem 2: we don’t get goals from our wingers. Barnes and Murphy have 5 combined. Gordon and Elanga have zero in the league (non-penalty).

Last season we got 22 from Barnes / Murphy / Gordon

2023/24: 21 from Barnes / Gordon / Murphy / Miggy

2022/23: 20+ from Miggy / Joelinton / Murphy / ASM
