It's almost like we're not in April having played more games than anyone else in Europe, never mind the likes of Bournemouth who have played significantly less than us and have a lot less fatigue to manage as a result.

I don't think this argument holds any water anymore given the break we've just had, unless the players are so fatigued they have CNS fatigue and need a year off to recover, 3 weeks is plenty of time for anyone, let alone a young man to fully recover. I agree it was definitely impacting when we were playing twice a week every week.

Oh well, guess the 'hope he learns/evolves' argument goes out the window.

More freshness

More athletes

More availability

Will never consider counter-attacking football as a primary tactic

Intensity or bust

Works well when we're not in Europe and bringing that to teams competing in Europe who need to manage fitness/availability, but has proven twice now it's unsustainable in a season when we're fighting in Europe too.

I just hope he has a good chance to sit down and reflect on the why's and the what's and properly attack next season. He's got to change his approach, no question. I really want him to find success again after a poor season.

I didn't see the game on Sunday cos I'm on a shite holiday in Wales. Certainly not going to judge the game based on opinions on here [emoji38]. Still think Howe is young enough and intelligent enough to gel the intensity and technical side together.

"Intensity" still to be "our Identity"?

I get what he's trying to say there, but sometimes if you have to pass sideways just to keep possession it's not the worst thing. I hope if he's here next season he will try and evolve to a more possession based game, I really think that's how you beat the shit teams like sunderland.

Personally, I really enjoy Howe's style of play when the team are really on it.

Just need to improve the first 11 in a couple of areas, and then desperately need to improve the squad with better players that can come in when players in the first team are flagging, and Howe needs to make use of these players more, so that the team can keep up the same energy levels through the season.

The fact that he's highlighting our failings in attack rather than our failings in defence is concerning. Front foot football is great but it has to be married with defensive solidity if we're ever going to kick on.

So much of the pressure the team invites on itself is from poor play going forward.

Reminds me of Rafa's description of a short blanket. Doesn't cover your feet or your head depending on which way it's pulled.

Our issue is we often invite pressure by passing sideways rather than risk losing the ball by taking a risk to pass forward or take on a player, but we just then end up losing the ball in a more dangerous position for us.

Keeping possession is fine when you have the players that will reliably keep the ball and will eventually find the killer pass.

For a team like us, we just end up working opportunities for the opposition rather than ourselves most of the time.

That's an indictment in itself. It means the players just aren't that good.

Although I'd like to see Howe try a 4-4-2 for a change with Wolt as a number 10.

You can’t really read too much into what Howe says as he tries to say as little as possible.

In terms of playing style, all the top teams play with intensity, and they also all play “sideways and backwards” football when necessary to take the sting out of a game. They’re not things you need to choose between IMO. I do agree that we don’t have the players for it though.

Never heard that, I like it

I'm a bit surprised that the tag line that people are grabbing onto here is the sideways passing rather than the alarming doubling-down of recruiting players with 'athlete' as one of their main attributes.

I get what you're saying but it goes against a lot of what we hear about the importance of pre-season and how long it takes to rest and recover. I don't think this restful 3 week period (of which some of our players didn't actually have a rest) is some sort of magic tonic to make all our ailments vanish, physically and mentally.

You’re talking about it like it’s some failed method that’s never worked. Klopp won titles playing like that

Get this, this is going to blow your mind... I respect Eddie for what he's done well. What I don't respect him for is spending 700m (or whatever) and having us deservedly 14th, playing derisory football for the last 12+ months.

13 other teams and managers have his number on that evidence.

"[emoji38]"

This seems to be the latest sleight of hand, choosing the gross spend over his entire time here and then handpicking the current league position.

Then acting incredulous when people see what you're trying to do.

Glad Eddie and I are on the same page about the attacking. Fix that and you fix everything. Dunno if we can, like, but the solution lies there.

I specifically said it hasn't and isn't working for us. I'm sure if Howe had arguably the PLs most effective right-sided attacker of all time next to peak Mané and Firmino, Van Dijk playing every single game of the season.. a bench and supporting cast of super-experienced PL stalwarts like Lallana, Milner, Henderson and nearly all their big hitters having an injury-free season with most regular starters getting 28+ PL apps (Keita & Lovren aside) then Howe might win the PL too.

Instead we've got players who can't trap a ball or cover passing lanes out of possession.

Horses for courses. Liverpool pressed like demons out of possession because they could keep the ball when they had it, they could recover their energy whilst on the ball. When we get the ball we're knackered and we stand about with no energy to make passing options available.

Just my opinion mind.
