Absolutely no one I know who goes to the match with me or I speak to regularly on and away from here think we are an elite team. No one. So not sure where you get “most of us” from but it sounds like you are including yourself. Let me break it to you gently. We are not and never have been an elite team. We are a good team and occasionally we can be very good which we proved 22/23. This however is the very beginnings of a new phase so we don’t know what we are yet 23/24 but hopefully time will show we have progressed. As it stands we haven’t. Let’s see where we are come January.

Guest
We've shown so far this season that we're still not at City and Liverpool's level (although for 60 minutes we were against Liverpool), and that if we're not on it or if the tactics are a bit off, we can still get a hiding against one of the 6-8th placed teams (like Villa). If win the next 3 I'll still be confident we can repeat last year. If we win say 2 of them, top 5 might be a challenge but no reason we still can't do well and consolidate as a top 6-7 team. If there’s one thing I’ve learned as I approach one month short of following NUFC for 40 years is never get too high when things are going well but make sure you do enjoy those times as much as you can and never get too low when going through a bad spell. This is just the second full season of hopefully the biggest rebirth of our or any football club has witnessed. Try and enjoy it and don’t get too low about the bumps in the road along the way. duo
Our form started to tail off towards the end of last season. And we've not really picked up this season either. It is not the results I am concerned about atm it's how we are playing. And we haven't been at our best for a while. That is what concerns me the most. Our system just needs a total rethink. The Prophet
Is "elite" the new "world class" where we chuck teams and players into a category based on our own subjective metrics? We're a very well coached side, with a few very good players and a few passable players. We lack quality depth, but as time goes on the squad will continue to get stronger. We've punched well above our weight for two seasons now thanks to Howe and his staff. Whenever we've hit a poor run of form we've always turned it round, which also tells you how healthy the mentality of the squad is and Howe is always looking to tweak. It is interesting how streaky our form is since he took over though. Edited September 3, 2023 by The Prophet

It was never going to be a linear path to success. There will be worse bumps in that road than three losses in a row, one a narrow defeat to the reigning treble holders. huss9
players seem so mentally fragile compared to last season. also i think the poster in the other thread nailed it. "This season is not a reward to last year's team, it's a new season. Earn it! Maybe all the Champions League and Amazon talk, and a few have dropped their levels." I'm sticking with Eddie. I had a feeling this season was going to be tougher. The bottom line is if the bad results/performances continue then at some point Eddie will be toast, it's just the nature of elite level sport. However, got to trust the manager and the players, and get behind them.
Dokko
100% behind wor gaffer, even if he is making some mistakes. It's been such a 9/10 (minimum) performance from him for so long, he was always going to have a dip. Let's back him through this rough period and we'll all be better off for it. nufc4eva
If you look at last season after a bad run we when on long unbeaten streaks, sure we even lost 3 in a row and then started winning constantly. Gonna keep positive and hope happens this time as yesterday was trash from start to finish.
ilikenewcastle
I'm confident that the last 3 games will be the equivalent of the Liverpool, Man Utd (cup final), City games last season. Eddie to mix things up and give them a kick up the backside and we'll make the most of the more winnable fixtures coming up.
TheHoob
Last big test for Eddie imo was the slump of form we had around the cup final, and he turned it around and got us into the CL. Every faith he'll turn this around.
SUPERTOON
It’s till worth remembering, although it is 3 defeats in a row, one of them was away to the treble winners who have won 18 games in a row.
RobS
I hate to agree with Hope, as hes usually a bell end lol, but I do agree with his points in his latest video, it wasnt the defeat that was the problem yesterday, it was the manner of it. Last seasons successes were built upon a foundation of togetherness and the sum of the parts being greater - this is beginning to look like it is not the same this season, and im not as of yet sure why. Bruno is not playing well, Pope devoid of all confidence. The fabled best defence in the league can't buy a clean sheet, and without Botman looks frail and sluggish at best. Trippier isn't attacking probably as a result of the Defence being weak and the midfield are not holding the ball, pressing well or creating anything. Its very worrying, and it is vital that they start to work harder for each other again, too many sloppy mistakes or half-arsed plays yesterday for this early in the game. Gallowgate Toon
The only thing Hope is wrong about is that Bruno/Tonali can't play together. It's far too early to say anything like that but it's also a strange point. They're not similar players and they play in a 3. Why isn't he saying Tonali can't play with Joelinton? He mentioned this after the 352 experiment in preseason and has now raised it again as a convenient controversial talking point for his rag.
Stottie
Just my own concern but Trippier's not getting forward anything like as much as before. We've gone from a team that hits loads of crosses to one that hits very few. The Villa game started with two goals from crosses but we've not seen many since. Almiron's biggest chance against Liverpool was from a Joelinton cross.

Id argue Trippier did quite well against them all. When we’re playing teams that don’t have top left wingers I assume he’s going to be far more attacking focused like. The Prophet
I'm not remotely worried like. Perhaps if we perform like last night into our kinder run of fixtures I might be.

A lot of work for the Gaffa to do. Our lack of pace In the backline plus Popes lack of confidence is really hurting our ability to compress space also. hopefully we can gain some confidence in the games coming up. Fully agree. The first time a team did the box midfield to us was the 3-0 Villa game. Killed us. Arsenal beat us with it. Brighton tried but they couldn't beat our press consistently although they had some success with it which lead to the goal. At home, the intensity of the press is better and more effective. Villa had some success with it when we beat them 5-1 but the quality of the press won out that time and Villa didn't make the most of it. We need a Plan B for when the press isn't working so well - especially away from home where teams have more confidence. Once you beat a press 2-3 times, our team loses confidence and composure and the other team gains it. The cost of it is that teams number 10's have the ball, their able to feed wingers 1v1 with fullbacks or make it tough for CBs and have loads of options on the ball. Then momentum goes the other way. Likewise teams have been giving Burn all the time in the world on the ball on the left - he's not going to do owt with it. The recipes need evolution. ATB
I must say I´m really really really disepointed in Howe, one of my favorit football person that exist. I just can´t recognize my team. We are playing scared of losing, we dont seems to have any stamina and our passing game is a joke. But worst of all, we dont seem to have any plan. Defend to our life and hit long? The thing that I always has admired with Howe is his determination to win, and never be afraid. but this season, thats the only thing the team seems to do. be scare of losing. Like I said. I´m som disapointed. What have we done all summer? He's been tactically naive and unable to react to the other coaches moves in all our games really. really worrying.
