I’d like to see us try Wilson with Fraser left, ASM right, Almiron as a number 10.

Add 2 decent new central midfielders, an upgrade at LB and RB and a new manager..we might even be alright.

Phil Jones on a free [emoji38]

I’d take that right now. Not good enough for Man Utd but let’s be honest with ourselves, he’s better than most of the shite we’re likely to end up with this summer.

I doubt he’d be up for playing under Bruce for Ashley wages though.

Newcastle United may turn to Chelsea and England midfielder Ross Barkley, 27, if they fail to sign his compatriot Joe Willock, 21, from Arsenal. (The Athletic - subscription required)

Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury, 23, is pushing for a loan move to Newcastle. The former England Under-21 international sees it as a chance to play regular first-team football. (Northern Echo)

Can recall @brummie saying that Barkley was terrible for Villa last season?

Jones is 29 so that wouldn't make sense, but then again he's damaged goods (20 games in two years) and connected to Man Utd, so, y'know...

Break-ya-legs Choudury seems an inevitable signing assuming the big clubs don't fancy throwing us lowlifes any scraps. A creative choice, as honest Steve might say.

Wonder what the craic with Willems is. Trying to see if he's still capable of kicking a ball after two years of not having done so?

How many loans are you even allowed to name in a matchday squad? 2? It's 4 loan signings in total isn't it?

Stuff to set your pulses racing in any case.

What's mad about Phil Jones is he broke into top flight football so young and has ended up playing so few games. Bizarre career.

His breakthrough season at Blackburn and start at Man Utd I thought he’d go on to win 100+ caps and captain Man Utd & England for years, he looked an awesome prospect.

These are just big names who have been found wanting or are over the hill, perfect for managers who don't actually watch players or have any systems which require certain assets. Plus they are British so again you can see the attraction for Bruce.

"Proper players" as Souness would say.

It is like the Rose signing. They are  name enough and "British" enough to placate and abate lots of our fanbase that remembers them being good.

Just another example of how we've purposefully limited ourselves by switching from a knowledgeable and cultured manager who can pick a player, to a know-nowt twunt who wouldn't know a good player if it was staring him in the face.

Bruce signings

Find it laughable when people use Rafa's signings as a stick to beat him with, meanwhile we've got this mug in the dugout who hasn't got a fucking clue.

Tbf, I don't think Bruce is that bad at identifying players. Robertson and Maguire at Hull, Wilson, Willock, Lewis still has time to come good here, Fraser perhaps too, Lazaro wasn't too bad although the fecker never played him. He just hasn't got a clue how to use or nurture them the majority of the time.

I doubt he had anything to do with identifying any of them.
When you don’t rely on tactics (because you’re a dinosaur) your requirements are simple. You just tell your recruitment team to look for fast players (Robertson, Fraser, Lewis), big players (Maguire, Krafth, Choudhary) attacking players with a bit of magic (Willock, Lazaro) and strikers that can stick it away.  Every now again your Luddite approach to recruitment will unearth a gem who, despite your 1980s coaching, finds a way to shine and earn himself a big move.

Good post @Holmesy. I was probably giving him far too much credit with respect to identifying players; but the point remains about the benefits of having a manager with knowledge and connections on a global scale. As opposed to Stevey Kebab who'll even pick you up from Stoke in his Ford Escort if you fancy playing for Newcastle, like it's the late sixties.

Just like everything else with this club, the requirement (or lack thereof) is just lazy. Like Yorkie says, any ol British cast off will do. Can't be fucked to do any proper scouting.

Plus if they are established names like Ross Berkeley and Phil Jones, even wor Gary the window cleaner will know about them, you don't need any fancy Dan scouting knowledge to identify your next target!
