Not specifically re this , but why is it people on a regular basis state, we could go for him or him etc only for a few on here to put a downer on speculation, such as City, Spurs , Liverpool or Man Ure are interested in them, are we that inferior or are we too far North as has happened with other potential signings?.

Snowflakes, innit?

Would anyone consider going for Firmino?

On a free, loads of experience, grafter and still has ability.

He is physically done. He is getting injuries constantly, and his pressing and running stats are significantly lower than in previous seasons. A unique player in his prime, but any premier league club taking him on is a considerable risk.

Because interest from Spurs could force us to pay his release clause, which could affect how much we can spend on others.

Ugarte looks fantastic, but he has a £53m buyout clause and interest from Spurs.  If Saints go down, Romeo Lavia might be a cheaper option as would Thuram or Kone. We have three very good and obvious options at DM, and I would guess another one or two we haven't even heard about yet.

Ugarte is a pure number 6 whereas Kone and Thuram are more number 8s imo

Both could be options don’t get me wrong - but I think we need a full time 6 just to give us a differing option within the squad

Wage structure of a 25 man squad in a nutshell. Teams you mention have a much higher sliding scale. Our top earners at £125kpw are on less than some of their squad players.

The suggestions are that if we finish in the Champions League and maybe even just European places in general, that we are willing to pay that release clause for him.

At just 21 years of age and already at the level he is at, that outlay will likely be considered justifiable.

Sporting had been trying to get him to sign a new contract to take out the clause, but his reps have made it clear he isn't going to do that due to the interest in him.

Claudio Echeverrí - new Argentine wonderkid just dropped.

Maatsen at Burnley looks decent, on loan from Chelsea, maybe an option.

Aye, he’s looked good whenever I’ve seen them this season.

Max Caqueret from Lyon.

Looks similar to Bruno, style wise. Doesn’t dominate games like Bruno does but does look faster and more agile (handy in CM positions).

He’s looks very intelligent with his pressing and covering.

Ansu Fati being made available in the summer. Still really young, would've been perfect as a loan because I think they'll ask a crazy amount for him. But he's certainly the type Howe could transform.

He’s on crazy wages- well over £200kpw.

Ferran Torres still only 23 can play across forward positions and previously wanted by the consortium before he joined Man City.

Ship may have sailed and competition would be hot, but would tick a lot of boxes.

The £170k p/w he’s on now probably says no

Nice to see Liverpool stepping aside to allow us to go in for Bellingham.

/yeahtotallyrealistic

Probably more realistic than Liverpool to be fair. Just think of the expectation on him if he went to Liverpool. They expect him to single handedly turn things around in a team with lots of issues.

For us, all he'd have to do is put a few tackles in, pass it to Bruno, and put fewer shots in the stands than Longstaff or Willock. Willock, JL7 and Longstaff all have terrific energy, but so does Bellingham.

If we get into any European competition, I think we'll see:

- GK, Dubs & Karius leave and we bring an experienced head back in as a happy rotation option. Fraser Forster?

- Bring in one 'prime' CB in who offers more pace as an option + a youngster if Lascelles leaves.

- Had a hunch for a while that we might try and get Hickey in at some point, especially if we're priced out of Tierney. Targett is a very valuable squad member and absolutely should stay.

- CM requires some big outlay with one starter and one younger squad option as a minimum. Thuram ticks a lot of boxes for the former - physical, technical quality that makes him decently press resistant, able to rotate in-game into multiple midfield positions to help free up Bruno etc.

- Expect 2 wide players, maybe 3 if Maxi leaves (if he continues to struggle with fitness then we may look to move him on in the summer). Barnes + a younger player who can fill in out wide as well as through the middle.

The more the season has gone on, the less I feel we're in the market for a true attacking mid - I'm pretty sure we won't go for Maddison now unless it's a fantastic deal. Wirtz would be the dream but someone like Alex Scott is more likely if we explore this route.
