I don't think giving him 60 minutes is so much a risk of injury, because he's already had one U21 game and multiple behind closed doors games.

The reason it's a risk is because if he's even 5% off full speed it could cost us in the game. The problem is, we still don't know whether Kelly is anywhere near a quality performance.

The other option is to play Tino CB, but I really can't see that happening.

Schar is only missing in two games, so if Botman was to come in, he could quickly be brought back out of the firing line when Schar returns.

It won't say much about Howes confidence in Kelly if he plays Botman mind.

Tbf to Kelly, was anyone good in that West Ham game? And we were under performing in all the other games he played.

The game before that which he played at CB was Chelsea in the cup and everyone was raving about him and suggesting he replaced Burn.

In reality he’s a bog standard PL CB who had one shitter for us. Some people are going on as if we’re chucking in Cacapa.

I'm still hopefully that he will become the player we thought he would.

We know how meticulous Eddie is with new signings. At least we know Eddie won't give up on him, in fact he will be determined more than ever to make him into a player for us.

Quote

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Sven Botman returning after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March: "He's worked incredibly hard to get himself in a good condition. He's had three games, a lot of internal training as well. He's certainly in and around my thoughts. I'll have to make a decision on who I think best fits that position. Great to have Sven in and around and available again.

"We've taken longer than maybe we normally would have done through respect of the injury he had to try and make sure he has the best chance of staying fit and when he comes back, hitting the ground running, which is absolutely vital.

"I've got a decision to make in terms of team selection, but if Sven is in the squad it's because he's fit and available."

I didn't realise he had played 3 games.  I suppose they had some behind closed doors friendlies arranged for him, too.

All sounding pretty positive.  I still think it would be a bit mental to chuck him back in away at Spurs and/or Arsenal after so long out.  More from a performance perspective and how much quicker and difficult the games will be to say, a more steady affair at home, where we might be rotating anyway.  Like the 3rd round of the FA Cup.  But Howe sees him in training every day and Bunce is supposed to be overseeing all the performance related stuff to stop us bringing players back too soon.  So I'm sure it will be the right decision, either way.

As much as I'd take Botman over Kelly any day, I wouldn't have Botman play more than 10-15 minutes against Spurs, just to avoid any injury recurrence.

He's already played 3 games though?

Intensity might be different but surely you have to get back in the sea at some point?

I’d be really surprised if he started. If Tripps is fit I’d start Tripps with Kelly RCB and tell Tripps to talk Kelly through the game.

He’ll need the practice for the Arsenal game as surely Botman sits that one out and starts against Bromley or comes on at 60 mins.

As has been said by others, if Botman is physically ready to go (signed off as such by Bunce), but the concern is match fitness then I don't see how that does not apply to Kelly, who has only played one full game six weeks ago (West Ham 2-0 loss) and other than that only had two extra time substitute appearances since September 21st. They're both going to be rusty as hell, which is a major worry in itself.

I can't see him starting Botman, but i also kinda think an inanimate pole is better than Kelly

Was fairly obvious from the presser that he’d play, tbf. Howe was surprisingly open.

Didn't watch, but heard that. Still, it's a big move. Shows a lot of confidence from both sides. Not so much in Kelly, mind. Exciting, though.

Hopefully banking on being 4-0 up at HT and able to give him a breather so he can play at Arsenal an’ all
