Sven Botman: targeting January return (Howe)

There were some noises that he's our number one target and we view him as future captain material. If so that's not an unreasonable price. Especially when you consider what the likes of Dias, Laporte, Van Dijk, Maguire, etc went for. If you want top bracket you have to pay up.

Not at all when you consider we've just spent £25m on a 30 year old with probably no resale value and who will be a bit part player at best if we stay up, whereas Botman could be part of the spine of our team for a decade.

Exactly what I was thinking. Granted the urgency for the Wood deal was more pressing as we were doomed without a striker, but with this deal, we would probably get our money back at least, assuming he's as good as our scouts seem to think he is. You have to back your judgement at the end of the day.

Just had a look and Diego Carlos, Nico Schlotterbeck, sven botman all play as left CBs.

Badiashile hasn't acually played too many games recently but looks like he can play on either side.

Gleison Bremer plays in the middle of a back 3

Carlos can play both.

Got a feeling the club want to see a result at the weekend before making any big moves on players. Just works better for everyone if that threat subsides a bit. We're not so desperate, players are more willing. Otherwise it's looking for players who'll stay in the championship.

In a world where Chris Wood is worth £25m I don’t see why we should shy away from paying £45m for a young and talented player in a position we desperately need.

Even if it means we can only get another CB on loan, I would be happy with Botman and Fernandez/Schar until the end of the season.

Aye - said it before but tomorrow and Leeds are absolutely huge not just in terms of where we sit at the end of the season, but in who we might be able to attract at the end of the window.

Sometimes you’ve got to wax 50m on a shit defender. Sometimes you’ve got to do it three times. This is the game of kickball. Look at the absolute shite that City got through before landing on Diaz and Laporte. £40m or so for Mangala when that was baller money.

Arsenal:

Mari

Mustafi

David Luiz lol

Man United:

Bailly

Lindelof

Maguire

Everton:

Mina

Keane

I could go on and on. All expensive, all shit or at best not good enough.

If we see Botman as the long term leader at the back much like Kompany was for Man City then I can see us paying the asking price now.

Can’t blame Lille, they know he’s our No1 target, we need quality, we have the money and as we get closer to the deadline, get increasingly desperate.

If Lille aren't going to change their mind or move the goal posts again then I think we should take the risk and make that offer and sign him.  value seems fair -  he's got loads of potential, he's commanding, he's good on the ball, he's good in the air, and they see him as our future captain.

If we see Botman being here for the best part of a decade the price, if true, isn't that ridiculous.

Feel we are being very calculated with FFP though those extra 10m add up and potentially mean we can't bring in an extra player or two or hamstring movement in the summer.

Not convinced he gets any cheaper in the summer (especially if his form is consistent) and there will be more competition for him.

Don't clubs end up just getting fined for breaching FFP in the end.  It's what happened to everyone else.

Man City

"The investigation by Uefa ultimately culminated in an £8.8million fine and a two-year European ban being overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), while the Premier League's inquiry continued privately until recently."

We're a long way off being hamstrung by FFP given that transfer fees are amortised over the length of the contract. If we sign a player for 50m on a five year contract that's only £10m towards this season's FFP calculation.

And I'd like to think each new sponsorship deal will be 1 year so on each league improvement we can boost the size of the next deal.

I highly doubt FFP has any impact on what our owners are thinking right now - given its a lookback at a few years and they are yet to announce any of the commercial deals that could literally offset every single pound we spend.

In which case I think signing precocious young talent like Batman and Ekitike should be a priority even if we have to pay slightly more than we'd like. That doesn't stop us signing the ones we need for immediate survival, they go hand in hand.

What if it's not slightly more but 50% more or more than that ?

Depends how good we think they are I guess. It would be a good indicator which other clubs are in for them.

Not when you play friendlies in Saudi at £50m a pop.
