Think it's also why I'm still keen on Guehi for RCB. It's high risk so having someone like Guehi who's got the recovery pace on the occasions he doesn't get there first is so important

I’m also hoping we can sign Guehi in the summer, would massively improve the squad.

he’s nowhere near as proactive as Burn has been in the last 6 months or so. It’s one of the main reasons why the gap between defence and midfield isn’t being as easily exploited now.

Burn is winning almost twice as many aerial challenges as Botman (last season) per 90, and competing in around 50% more ground duels too. There’s been a notable difference.

I’m keen on a fast RCB. Just not sure Guehi fits the bill. Would hope for quicker personally and more dominance in the air. Even a bit more aggressive.

Not saying that’s an easy combination to find mind at a reasonable price.

Botman was struggling with injuries last season and Burn is currently in the form of his life.

But the main reason for the gap between midfield and defence being better is Tonali, simple as that.

Howe has always wanted his defenders to press high. Botman was the perfect example of that in 22/23. In fact it was noticeable how much we missed that whenever Burn used to fill in for him. Thankfully Burn has begun to get better at that aspect and also it helps prevent his lack of pace being exposed by trying to win the ball high rather than dropping deep.

Why would you demotivate one of your best players?

If he’s genuinely fit, there’s not a good reason to not get him involved in playing in some capacity. It’s good for him physically.

This isn’t a video game.  If he’s been busting a gut through rehab to get fit. Let him play.  He shouldn’t be overloaded obviously and it should be taken carefully.

Because qualifying for CL is that important. If he is a professional Botman will understand that and not let it demotivate him.

There is not enough games left to justify letting him get up to speed.

Disagree, looked plenty up to speed when he came back in after a much longer lay-off. He was fantastic both legs of the semi against Arsenal. He's easily one of our best players, if he's fit then he should play.

I remember him having a few dodgy moments when he first came back, didn’t take long for him to catch up though, I agree with that.

Our CB pairing has been working out pretty well lately so I just don’t see the point of taking the chance unless we already have the game in the bag.

Nice problem to have! certainly you’d not drop either of Schär or Burn right now on form.

I wouldn’t drop them and I wouldn’t sub them out either in a game that was still in play.
Don’t get me wrong, having Botman back is fantastic news. But for me that’s mostly because we would have been fucked if Schär or Burn got injured.

*Might consider a 5 man defence to see out a game though.

Botman is 100% the better defender out of the two. Drip feed him minutes and maybe a couple of 60 min run outs nearer end of season

Forget his defensive work, he is also an excellent passer of the ball and we have missed him feeding the through ball to our midfielders. Just prey that he has a period where he is injury free as he's still at a good age

Always makes me laugh when people suddenly become medical experts on players when they haven’t got a clue what’s actually going on - only the player and medical team will know exact details. He’s had his ACL surgery which by all accounts has gone very well. The second op was a knee scope to remove a loose body, it’s fairly easy to recover from as it’s not structural. If he’s fit to return for Ipswich then great 👍

Tindall needs to take some more lessons from Eddie. Don’t let people know when players are coming back. Should have said he’s still out for a month and then, abracadabra, he’s back next game instead.

Seen a clip of him instantly going ballistic when we score against Palace then, obviously and quickly, reminding himself of his new status. Turns round, quick clap, hands in pockets 😂

Love to see this guy back for Ipswich. Get some pace back in central defence. Not saying anyone should be dropped because of todays result. Off the bench when we're hopefully comfortably ahead.

Pace? You’re not getting that from Botman, like.

He’s does read the game a lot better than most defenders and has the habit of being the right place at the right time.
