Hugo Ekitike (not playing for Liverpool for a while)

270k?? Our interest was fake. There was no way in the world the agent agreed terms with us (125-150k?) when he knew that Liverpool were in the market at 270k.

Terms were never agreed, the player was not interested and our bid was a tactic to get the Isak speculation put to bed early. No way we wanted that hanging over us until the end of the window.

Or maybe we did want him. Definitely one of the two.

The lad gives me bad vibes and I suspect he wouldn't have fitted into the ethos of our team culture given how we've got such a tight knit unit

I'm not pissed off he went to Liverpool, I get that they're a very attractive club willing to pay him astronomically.

But he does seem to be a mercenary and we haven't got the financial freedom to take risks on £70m players who give off the impression that they wouldn't fit in here

Doesn’t really matter either way TBH, we could never get close to that Liverpool deal.

It’s only annoying as he genuinely has a skill set that can make him phenomenal and it would be a preference to have that be experienced here.

But at £79m and club breaking wages, it’s one you can let pass as we have Isak. A lesser talent that could jump up is equally as good right now as an alternative.

I know. It was the Liverpool power play story that really wound me up. I just wanted to flesh out the alternative narrative as we don’t know either way what happened. The idea that we bid for him knowing that Liverpool were interested in him and Isak reverses that Liverpool narrative. We moved first, they reacted. Understanding the reality behind the Isak/Ekitike story should be of enough interest for fans.

Anyway nice to connect with you again Ian. Been a long time. I remember when you were a teenager. 😁

A weird turn of events. I believed we'd bid on him having sealed personal terms, so I now struggle to believe the rumoured Liverpool wages, which are probably a windup. The fee for an unproven player is crazy, all fees seem to be. We signed Harvey Barnes as "just Harvey Barnes" after a 13 goal season from him two years ago. He'd be 60M in 2025.

I know we're all eager for the club to do well, but probably best to ignore transfers until they are actually sealed. There are too many jokers and engagement milkers out there.

You were never their first choice, Hugo. Just remember that when you might think about kissing the badge when you score your first goal.

Against us aye?
