I don’t want to put a downer on things, but I’ve got this horrible awful feeling he will flop here…

Really? The guy has shown flashes of brilliance already. I'm very comfortable he will be a maestro for us in midfield.

I'd definitely start him Thurday now things looked maybe a bit stale in midfield on Saturday players might be getting tired as well think now is the time to mix things up.

This. He needs to start a game and Shelvey was pedestrian on saturday, so there is no better time. Would be nice to see willock getting some decent through balls and some more link up between ASM and bruno

Imagine someone trying to explain to you in December we’d have a £40m CL player on the bench to accommodate Jonjo Shelvey.

Bruno isn’t a defensive midfielder, he was never meant to replace Shelvey.

I've seen a fair bit of analysis that suggests he's equally comfortable as a DM or a CM.

My guess is that Howe will sign a player of similar quality and play a double pivot, with Bruno and a new guy.

In his last two cameos against Brentford and Brighton we have changed formation, when he came on, to this:

           Bruno       Shelvey

Joelinton     Willock          Fraser

                     Wood

It's an insight into how Eddie Howe sees Bruno.

On what planet is Jonjo Shelvey a defensive midfielder?

Who's that question aimed at?

He's been sitting in front of our back four in an 8 game unbeaten run, so clearly Eddie Howe sees him as a defensive midfielder of sorts. More of a ball re cycling, quarter back but a defensive midfielder all the same.

There’s a question of structure if you remove Shelvey. Joelinton isn’t really a professional midfielder and Willock also doesn’t really provide that traditional base to a midfield.

It’s possible that in time Bruno will be trusted to do that on his own, but isn’t at the moment.

solitude on the page before said Bruno wouldn’t be replacing shelvey as he’s not a DM. Jonjo isn’t a defensive midfielder either. He’s a midfield playmaker who has been told by Howe to sit deep and stay close to the back four. There are a number of posts that suggest Bruno is not capable of occupying this role. If shelvey can do it I can see no reason why Bruno can’t.

Shelvey occupies the DM role in the same way as Pirlo did. (And yes, I can’t fucking believe I’ve mentioned them both in the same sentence). They don’t break up play or tackle, but use their range of passing to instigate attacks from deep lying areas. Of course Bruno can do this too, but he seemingly has far more to his game- namely ball carrying, movement, and energy- all of which Shelvey lacks. A ‘specialist’ DM in the midfield in the Kamara mould would transform the current midfield no end- sitting deep, breaking up attacks and laying the ball off, and allowing Bruno a starting position, allowing him to roam and use his positional play, ball carrying and passing, and making us play even more on the ‘front foot’ as Howe seemingly prefers. Seems a no brainer to get someone in like that, and hence drop Shelvey moving forward.

Aye, Bruno has said himself that he's glad we know that we haven't signed a forward/attacking mid.  In my mind, he slots perfectly into (and improves) the role Shelvey's playing at the min, whatever people want to call it.

What you described there is a form of DM, or a holding midfielder. A person who rarely advances forward, stays close to the back line, provides decent/good vision and passing, and has a bit more of defensive duties compared to other midfielders. Shelvey is the Newcastle midfielder who fulfills that role. A midfielder with a defensive duty does not mean he has to tackle more than others, he can do all of his defensive duties by proper and smart positioning. Sergio Busquets and Andrea Pirlo (as mentioned by the other poster) are prime examples, though those two of course have more freedom in dictating play than Shelvey does.

Based on all the minutes played by Bruno at Newcastle so far, he never showed any sign of covering that role. He is young and he can read the game well, you can argue that he can learn that role. But he was never played there in Newcastle, Lyon, or Brazil.

Bruno plays in a similar role that Iniesta played: a creative box to box midfielder, or as some call it: a Mezzala. This role is usually given to a creative and mobile player who is allowed to get forward and support upfront, but still has a lot of defensive duties. Mezzala is similar to a box to box midfielder in the sense that both are mobile, but Mezzala is more technical and creative while a box to box midfielder is more physical and aggressive (J7 now). Whenever Howe brings Bruno in, he played him in that role, and that role has nothing to do with what Shelvey does. Actually, they complement each other, one is mobile and the other is holding position.

Very good post. Like to think that with both willock and linton flanking him he could be the more "holding" of the three. We would be much more progressive but would still have the nous and muscle to hold our own and shield the defence.

Shelvey has played well up to now but we need to progress...
