Exactly, he's in a press conference so he's been asked a question and had to answer it.

 

It's a bit different than players going on social media, asking their PR people to create something nice etc and post it to IG or whatever.

Seems likely to me that all of the players weren't desperate to see the back of him, that a big chill didn't descend over the whole training complex every time he was present over the past month, that far from being a sociopath he'd struck up a good relationship with plenty of the squad who probably enjoyed playing alongside him, and that far from there being no way back a decision to freeze him out and keep him on the sidelines would have been more detrimental by making the other players question their own prospects especially when it comes time for contract negotiations or when they themselves are ready to seek a move. Of course it's much easier to be understanding or magnanimous when you share the same career and are also earning tens if not hundreds of thousands of pounds each week.

I think one difference is that every player will have been fucked over by a club at least once in their career already, so they understand that it's up to the player to get everything they can out of their careers and it's up to the club to squeeze as much value out of the players as they can. 

 

There's an inherently adversarial relationship between labor and capital, and sometimes as fans we lose sight of that because it's hard to sympathize with millionaires. However, it's still the millionaires trying not to get fucked by the billionaires, just like you do your best not to get fucked by your company. 

 

Newcastle United FC doesn't give a flying shit if Isaac breaks his leg this year and can never play again, so if he has a chance to triple his salary he has to do it. Just like your company doesn't give a shit about you, and will have a job add out same day you can't work any more. These aren't collectives, they are corporations.

 

Yes it sucks for our team how this played out, but guys, grow up, that's just how fucking sports work man. If you want to be mad at somebody be mad at the club for not negotiating an acceptable salary for their star player. 

 

Or better yet, grumble a little bit and then move on, we've got good replacements in and the champions league to look forward to.

I think a lot of it has to do with great coaching but also consistently playing at CB.  He's spent about a quarter of his career at leftback which doesn't suit him.

Apologies if I still have my black and white tinted specs on but I'm really struggling to see any other English CB who is going usurp him. 

Not only is he a fantastic CB who can cover at LB, he also brings the intangibles like leadership and experience, it'll do the younger players a world of good to have a veteran like Dan to lean on.

I don’t quite know how it’s happened, but genuinely, he’s probably the best English centre back in the Premier League during 2025. The only thing which goes against his is a journeyman career and age. If the form holds up, he’s a shoo in for the World Cup.

Just about every review I read of his performances seems dismissive.  The best you can hope for is a kind of back-handed compliment:

 

"With Kyle Walker hopefully out of the England picture there is room for a defender who relies hopelessly and hilariously on his pace when covering. The natural heir to that throne is obviously the nimble Burn, who twice repelled Andorra attacks after poor passes out of defence simply by standing still and being large.  A better attack exploits those situations, a couple of which Burn created with sub-optimal choices and worse execution. England have never conceded with him on the pitch, though. What a six months he’s having."

 

The second some mediocre talent emerges at one of the Big 6 clubs, there will be many pushing for his ouster.

Dan is first choice LCB no? If he gets displaced by Botman, then that’s his WC chances gone, no?

I love him so much man. If ever there was a player I wanted to sit down and have a pint with it'd be him. He seems to be such a sound lad, every interview I've seen with him just makes me feel like you want to be around him. 

Also, he must be living his absolute dream life, scoring the winning goal at Wembley for his boyhood club, representing England and making it to the champions league.

Think its more about his game time for us if Botman/Thiaw come in and take minutes. We arent booming for competition for english CBs though right now. 

 

As others mentioned his versatility is a bonus. Not sure I want to see Burn at LB though for England. LCB in a three is useful though.
