Captain Steak Bakes (now managing Blackpool/revising history)

Recommended Posts

I remember watching a few episodes of Big Brother when Ron Atkinson went in. He wasn’t there for long but he hated it and wanted to leave but knew if he voluntarily left he’d not get his fee. This is what he said to Les Battersby about it

“I’d be very happy to pack my bags and go. I know this ain’t my scene. I'm having to keep a lid on a lot of things. In the immortal words of Steve Bruce, you've just got to grin and bank it.”

We obviously already knew his eventual payoff is more important than things like pride or self respect but it’s nice to know he’s very open about it away from the cameras.

Many say Pardew was worse, not to me, it's not even close. This cunt is the absolute worst ever.

It's like picking your favourite shade of shite. Bruce is more unlikeable as a bloke, but Pardew did far more damage to the club.

There’s a moment that pops up in the final win coverage a fair bit and it’s Fab on his own taking it all in and looking a bit overwhelmed by it all. My money says during some of that he’s casting his mind back to what he went through under this disgusting bag of spanners and can’t believe just how different things were and what they became.

In the Reddit thread about the Gayle interview there was a Hull fan saying he was arguably their best ever manager. Felt sorry for them. If you look at his record there, he got them promoted, survived one PL season, lost the FA cup final and then lost in the playoffs of their first European campaign. Then got them relegated the next season.

He's fucking dogshit as a manager and a nasty cunt to boot. Gayle was as nice as could be in that interview, hardly gave him a shoeing.

Off topic point but I’ve just watched that Gayle miss. Maxi had his shortfalls but the amount of chances I’ve seen from old games lately where he put it on a plate and they missed is unreal [emoji38]

That lad deserved a far better assist number.

Bruce is a cunt though. Up there with Pardew neck and neck.

I understand the argument and in no way would I downplay what a twat Pardew was. I just think Bruce is a terrible manager, did as much as Pards to perpetuate Ashley's continuing reign and is an utter shit stain of a human to boot. On top of managing any club that threw enough money at him, regardless of who they were (both Sheffield clubs, both big teams in Birmingham, both big teams in the NE), he was terrible at all of them, protected constantly in the media and is a slum landlord on top of it all.

Why does his 8 months at WBA never get spoken out?

Took over WBA when they were in the playoffs and when he was sacked they were lower-mid table. When they replaced him they immediately got back into the playoff spots.

Bruce was the worst.

Can only assume that the people who think it's Pardew had already checked out by the time Bruce came in. And fair play to them for that, no criticism here for that view.

But he was a different grade of awful for me. One small example that always sticks with me, quite apart from his terrible management was that in a press conference he brought up the fact he was sat on the toilet thinking about the match ahead and then remembered players like Shearer had played for the club and said something like "wow, just wow".

Not just downgrading the club like Pardew did, but telling us our best players were a distant dream, explaining what a low ambition manager he was, talking about his toilet thoughts like it's actual pre match work, and chortling away about it all in one go.

A proper ambassador for the club like Eddie Howe's name should not even be on his breath.

Anyway, surprised Bruce even knew about the criticism in the first place given that he doesn't do social media and was apparently proud of not being able to work an iPad.

There might be a genuine nice guy there somewhere, but he appears an absolute sham of a manager by today's standards and an embittered man, triggered by his ultimate failures.

He had early promise, I remember his Hudderfield run alongside the new stadium, exciting times for the area, loved that stadium at the time. At Wigan and even Birmingham there were flashes that he could be a good manager, if not more. There were points I definitely thought he could be an option for us at the time.

While he never had the pace, it still shocks me he never got an England cap as a player. Begrudgingly he was so solid and a great leader for Manure. Given what we know or him more recently it wouldn't be a surprise if he still held resentment.

Whether it was luck, circumstance or he really had some potential, he simply didn't appear to evolve as a manager or coach in the years after. The football world passed him by while he lived off previous reputation and being a "good guy" and "one of the lads". Seems he relied upon his assistants and the old boy, pal with the players factor combined with a "freedom to play" ie know tactics approach. That's on him.

It's sad to see someone that did acheive much as a player and had a consistent career in management at high levels, making a lot or money to boot, be so bitter and petty.

He never should have come to Newcastle to manage or be shortlist at that point of his career. It was an insult to the club. I will never begrudge him for taking it. At one point there was genuine passion in the guy for this club and shite or not I understand betting on yourself, if not respect it. You might as well retire if you dont. I do still begrudge him not walking away sooner.

Whatever motivate him these days, if he remembers, be it the money, the bitterness of failures or public shaming it's sad to see him unable to act with dignity and take the high road. Ah well, all good motivation for his next murder mystery novel.

That fella. And then praised him straight after he won something. And by something, I mean a cup, any cup, which nobody would ever see us win (because we don't win stuff) who also made no excuses for who he'd lost player-wise or was up against. Especially when he usually gave up before we even started ... well, I could go on, but won't.
