TRon
Batty was one of my favourite players at that time. Just brilliant I think because we had so many stars in the side at the time his role got underappreciated. KK was initially quite reluctant to go down the route of buying a defensive midfielder, but I think even he admitted he hadn't realised how good a footballer Batty was. I mean we've had some absolute shite players trying to do that job since.
Kanj
love these posts - I remember always being a fan of his but only really got to see us on television here in the US just a few times during KK and Dalglish times but really just enjoyed how good of a footballer he was - some of the quick 1 touch moves, i mean he was a "defensive midfielder" but he's better on the ball than any of our guys we currently have (not saying much)
Disco
Always got the impression he was a bit hit or miss with the fan base as he was not the flair player but I'd wager had stats been kept at the time, like they are now, he'd be the bloke who lost the ball least for us and won it back most. You don't win 40 odd caps for a decent England team, with most coming under Hoddle, if you're not a good footballer.

The quick one touch passing, and always delivered with precision were fantastic assets for a passing football team, and that he could close down the opposition so effectively was almost a bonus. I think Reid and Bracewell were very good as well for the title winning Everton side before that. Hunted opposition players down, but their distribution really worked well for their own side. HaydnNUFC
My dad hates him. Mentions a story how in his first training session he told Supermac ‘this is how you take a throw in’. My dad is the same. My dad hates him too. For Supermac alone though. No idea what transpired to leading him being sold but he was my dad's first hero. Candi_Hills
Batty was last into training, first to leave and spoke to no one. Shearer even speculated, "I'm not sure if he liked football."

Jaqen
Every time I see David Batty play I realize how much better he was than given credit for. Batty was a super super player Kanji[/member]. I had a ST during his time with us and he was a top player. A great addition to the team. He really moved us on a level imho. Mad how he's gone completely incommunicado now. Literally, career finished, disappeared. Iirc he didn't particularly enjoy football in general. Strange that because he seemed very popular amongst his team mates etc. I'd heard he would go to training, work his bollocks off, go home and very rarely socialise etc. Shearer talked about it a bit on one of the MOTD podcasts. Basically said he drove an hour and a half each day to training, didn't really say much and would leave the second they were allowed to. Never once stayed behind or did anything extra he didn't have to do. Didn't keep in touch with any of his team mates and nobody knew what he was up to now. Keane mentioned not long ago he was in the top few toughest opponents he's even had to play against too which is decent praise.

Paully
First time I’ve heard of this?! Assume it was after KK walked out?! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8971383/David-OLeary-reflects-exit-Leeds-boss-Mikel-Arteta-right-man-Arsenal.html After close to 10 years in the shadows of this sedate parish, are there any regrets? ‘I should have taken the Newcastle job in 2009. I’ve always loved the fans there. It reminds me of Leeds. I loved the Friday night in Newcastle before the game, the banter they had about them. So yes, that is my one regret. ‘I would have loved to speak to Mike Ashley and make an opinion of him. I didn’t know if Derek Llambias (managing director) was telling me everything about Mike. Something just didn’t add up.’
