Sometimes I wonder why footballers try to head the ball when it's literally there on the grass. Use your fucking foot, it's in the name of the game.

Feel sorry for him but he really fucked up.

Personally thought he misjudged the flight/bounce or Salah was just getting there first because of his pace, anyway.

I don’t think there was ever really a chance to get a foot to it and he thought ‘fuck it. I’ve come out this far’ and then launched himself at it for a diving header.

Would have been better off trying to somehow show him wide and then try and get back. But it’s all split second decisions at breakneck speed.

Handball isn’t a red card offence though. The sending off comes down to him denying a goal scoring opportunity and there is an argument that a defender is getting back and the attacker still has to control the ball and change it’s direction before taking a shot.

Mate. Aye a defender or two are on their way back, but there'd be no goalkeeper. If he gets the shot away quickly it's an open goal without even the defenders. A one-on-one with a goalie is itself considered a goalscoring opportunity - this is easier than that. It's a clear goalscoring opportunity.215475810_ScreenShot2023-02-19at12_13_14AM.thumb.png.837279f789bdbbf97982500c01dcbb4e.png

The game ban in circumstances like this feels overly harsh like. He and we were already punished with the red card, it feels overly harsh that he'll miss a cup final for a mistake, as opposed to say endangering an opponent or something.

Obviously the rules are the rules and you have to suck it up, but it does feel really shan, as Lineker pointed out on MOTD.

Not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone here, but isn't that pass from Allison heading towards the corner flag?

It's bending wide but Salah's getting it before the 18 yard line (I mean Pope is very close to Salah when he managed to touch it, albeit with his hand). Wide enough that if Pope had just stayed in goal Salah prob would've had to beat a defender or two and Pope. But it's become a significantly bigger opportunity by the time Pope's handled it.

You pretty much have to have a suspension though because otherwise a red card in say the 90th minute essentially carries no punishment. You could maybe say if it's in the first half no suspension needed.

I agree, it's the missing of a final that really sets it apart though. If Pope just missed Man City away it wouldn't feel harsh, yet if Joelinton had picked up a yellow yesterday he'd have a two match ban, but only in the league and not miss the final.

It’s a red card all day long

Super unlucky to misjudge the bounce and head the ball against the surface

He then totally panics - and the rest is history

Red card all day long.

His brother (Josh pope) was also sent off yesterday !  (goalkeeper). Strange world

mildenhall town Fc

To be fair, it wasn’t unlucky. He actually closes his eyes for the header.

Pretty much the only thing he’s done wrong for us and that’s his punishment. He must be distraught.

The entire card system needs remodelling tbh, the governing bodies encroach onto the sport every year with updates that rarely benefit the entertainment side of the sport, yet have left in tact a punishment system which makes no sense. If they're not ruining games as a spectacle they're unnecessarily destroying a blokes life long dream to play in a cup final [emoji38]

Just give the opposing team a goal for shit like this and cynical last man fouls. No need for anything else. Same for 2 yellows.

Dangerous challenges give the opposition a goal and force the fouling player to be substituted (if no subs left they go down to 10). 1 game ban that can be extended in serious circumstances of violent misconduct.

Not sure about all of that and find it hard to see them doing anything that involves goals without the ball going in the net- but these kinds of incidents should at least be a penalty.

this happens at the end of the game outside the box and the fouled team get almost no benefit - like us v Brighton last season. Probably other teams get more benefit by the player being suspended.

then you do get a penalty for a harmless ball hitting an outstretched arm. It’s all out of proportion.

Just watched the highlights again. I note that the reason Pope ended up in that no mans land, and having to make a challenge on Salah was his starting position, which he takes up whenever we have a set piece around the opponent’s box, of 30 yards from our goal. As Allison catches, then kicks it, Pope begins to retreat, realises he isnt going to make it and decides to go for the ball instead. If he had kept racing back toward his goal he probably wouldnt have made it, as he would have had to turn his back to Salah.
I do wonder though, why we didnt have anyone closer to Salah, baring in mind his pace etc, its not as if it was a corner.

closest man when free kick went in was Longstaff I think ?

*Edit, im talking complete bollocks
