Ilovetoon8788 Posted yesterday at 00:34 Share Posted yesterday at 00:34 At 34 and based on last season performance, he's done his time here. He should move on.
OverThere Posted yesterday at 03:00 Share Posted yesterday at 03:00 Tough crowd. He's in decline but has been very good for us.
NSG Posted yesterday at 05:02 Share Posted yesterday at 05:02 He was a really good keeper for us for a couple of seasons, but his form massively fell off a cliff this year. The number of times he’s charged out of his area to miss the ball completely is ridiculous. I’ll always be appreciative of that save vs Jones in the cup final. If that goes in then I’m not convinced we win the cup…

Started the next season really well but then got a bad injury against Man United and has never been the same since.

Rich Posted yesterday at 08:52 Share Posted yesterday at 08:52 He was the best shot stopper in the league during his early spell with us, and easily the best at one-on-ones, but Nut’s timeline pretty much nails it. If we can get £5M for him, he’s been yet another immense signing and incredible value for money.

TheBrownBottle Posted yesterday at 08:54 Share Posted yesterday at 08:54 If he goes this summer he might be my favourite NUFC keeper (it’s not a long list tbf) - he’s been a colossus for us in the past.

PauloGeordio Posted yesterday at 08:58 Share Posted yesterday at 08:58 Will be a fitting finish to his career going to his boyhood club. He’s been outstanding for us at times, and given us some laughs and some scares along the way. Bless Popey, bless his feet.

Better than Given for me - like Given he has his flaws (distribution being their shared weakness - my old seat in the Leazes put me head-height with Given and in line with the edge of the six yard box, Christ could that lad shank a goal kick) but I’d take Pope ahead of Given if I was asked to name a keeper. I can of course see the argument the other way.
duo Posted yesterday at 09:16 Share Posted yesterday at 09:16 It's not so much that Pope is a bad keeper - it's more the game has evolved to what role a keeper is expected to play in team tactics. Pope just has shown he's unable to adapt.

I just think Given maintained roughly the same high level for easily 5+ seasons. Edited yesterday at 09:30 by Collage

Yeah, it definitely seemed to be referred to far less. 100% can accept anyone preferring Given to Pope, it’s just Pope edges it for me.
Si67 Posted yesterday at 09:39 Share Posted yesterday at 09:39 Always had a soft spot for Mick Mahoney Super Goalie just for the song, the classic 70s look and I scored a penalty against him when he came to our school.

Penalty saving Pope. Distribution equally as bad.

His kicking was poor but wasn't much better or worse than most keepers of his day. Pope's is awful for his compared to his peers. KingArthur
Given made far less big howlers than Pope i think.
Pilko
At peak I'd say: Shot-stopping: Shay (just) Saving long shots: Pope Fewer howlers: Shay Command of area & crosses: Pope Distribution: Shay (just, both poor) Penalties: Pope Sweeping: Pope Injury reliability: Shay Got to think about the context of the era both played in too. Given's kicking was almost as crap as Pope's but the emphasis on it was much lower. Pope also played with a far better defensive unit in front of him, whereas some of Shay's best years he was stuck behind an absolute cowboy outfit. I'm probably giving it to Shay on longevity in our shirt but it's quite close. Both absolutely class at the top of their game and for me quite easily #1 and #2 in the PL era for us (Krul taking the bronze).
