Guest neesy111
I stumbled across this Chronicle article the other day when I searched 'Zidane Newcastle'. https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/history/five-world-class-stars-who-12173332 Didn't realise there was a rumour that we were interested in signing Ronaldinho for money plus Laurent Robert https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/ronaldinho-would-very-happy-join-1656482
joeyt
I knew all the other rumours that are mentioned but didn't know we were linked with Ronaldinho.

Guest
As good as Speed was, could you imagine peak Hamann alongside peak Rui Costa?
Stifler
I mean, I'm #teamWimbledon, but they didn't lie, cheat or steal the position - they "bought" it from horrible owners. If the FA want that to not happen again they should add some rules and regulations to prohibit it, but they haven't. Fear it might become more common in the future as teams get separated from their supporters and roots, being turned into "franchises" for their owners instead. The FA have put in place rules to prevent it from happening again. Even West Ham’s move to the Olympic stadium had to be approved. Of course like everything with the FA, if someone threw money their way then the rules would be relaxed.

Fear it might become more common in the future as teams get separated from their supporters and roots, being turned into "franchises" for their owners instead. It could happen again, but is unlikely to become a common occurrence. Even in the commercialised modern English game the concept of a franchise doesn't really work, because the marketable aspects of a football club are so intrinsically linked to the identity of the clubs and where they're from. The Wimbledon case was a very specific example because they had been without a home for over a decade and were unique having developed a fanbase that had spread beyond their early non-league roots in Merton. It was also unique in that you had a large New Town urban area that didn't have a Football League club. This is very rarely the case owing to both the way football culture and urban areas have developed in the UK, and the Milton Keynes (and the two similar Scottish examples) are basically circumstantial perfect storms. There really isn't in my opinion a great deal to be gained from moving a British football club. The failure of the MK Dons project is evidence of that. Ketsbaia
I always find it strange that it was AFTER we were good that Given, Speed, Hamann and Solano came in. Then we came 13th twice.
James
I always find it strange that it was AFTER we were good that Given, Speed, Hamann and Solano came in. Then we came 13th twice. We were still good though.we could beat almost any team but had major consistency problems but not ones which would put off many players from signing for us given that at the time we were one of the richest clubs in the world. Between 93/94 and 2006/07 (so our whole PL history pre-Ashley) other than two occasions we either finished in the top 6, got to Wembley, qualified for Europe or won a certificate. We were consistently a very good side just didn’t win anything.

Iirc the team was weakened in pretty much every other position at the same time, Speed wasn't great straight away and at his best still wasn't better than the player he replaced. Him and Hamman would never have surpassed the levels we had in Lee/Batty or Lee/Beardsley as well either imo, but if you'd added the others to the existing team it would have easily improved it, Given in particular. Speed became a lot better than Batty but I think when we signed Speed he hadn’t quite nailed down the central midfield role. Only with Robson as boss and Dyer beside him did he come into his own. Have we all forgotten about when super captain Scott Parker held aloft the Intertoto Cup (Although really it’s a bit embarrassing that we went to UEFA and asked where the trophy was)
