Aye, that's Ukraine, who beat Portugal to top spot in their group.

How dare they get a higher seed than them.

a higher seed than the fucking world champions though?!

Whatever anyone did at the WC has no influence on the EC. For instance, the reigning WC champs could end up not competing in the next WC should they not qualify normally.

But France topped their group too. Why should they be lower seeds than Ukraine?

How are seedings calculated?

Seedings are based on overall European Qualifiers rankings, which are determined as follows (results against teams in sixth place are discarded):

a) final position in group

b) points

c) goal difference

d) goals scored

e) away goals scored

f) number of wins

g) number of away wins

h) lower disciplinary points total (3 points for red card including for second booking, 1 point for single yellow card for a player in a match)

i) position in overall UEFA Nations League rankings

---

Fairly straightforward, unless France should be first seed based solely on being a historically bigger footballing nation.

It should surely take into account recent tournaments since they're the games that really matter. France have been beaten once in the last 2 tournaments and that was in the final of Euro 2016 in extra time. For a side to have that recent record, top their group in qualifying and not be seeded for the next tournament is mental.

They're seeded, they're just not a top seed because of the seeding rules of the competition they are in. I really don't see the issue. There's a set of rules with regards to seeding in the competition they are competing, they didn't make the top cut because of those rules, which apply to each competing nation.

Hate to say this but I agree with Kaizero. In the World Cup finals, if you finish 2nd in your group, you play the team who finished 1st in another group. They don't just go "oh well you finished 2nd but you're Brazil so we're switching it round, you can play Cameroon instead of Germany"

any seeding system that has the world cup champions and previous euros runner ups who topped their qualifying group below ukraine who lost all their matchs at euro 2016 and failed to qualify for the world cup is clearly flawed and needs an overhaul. This isn't about who's a bigger country its about france's recent record being excellent and somehow still being in pot 2 below a very mediocre team

Last tournament shouldn't bare any weight on how a team is seeded in the next tournament. Find it weird how France can be lower seeded than Ukraine when they have more points, better goal difference and more goals scored than them though.

You can be World Cup holders and not qualify for the next World Cup.

Ukraine is in a group of 5, France in a group of 6. Results against lowest team in 6-team groups are removed. Ukraine therefore has 20 points, France 19. Going by point b), as they are equal on point a), Ukraine gets the highest seed of the two.
