Don’t really know of him but I’m confused reading this thread - is he being bought as a goal scorer or creator?

He's 20, so he's no where near the finished article, nor has he nailed down his "position", so to speak.

From what I've seen, he might be 20 but he's built like a man. Strong, quick, technical, plays between the lines but still quite rough around the edges and still quite inconsistent.

Natural comparisons would be with Richarlison or perhaps a more physical version of Ayoze Perez. Apparently his work rate is top drawer too, so he's right up Eddie's street.

In short, he can play anywhere across the front but he's not accomplished in any position yet but he's still probably going to offer more than Chris Wood.

They aren't a million miles from each other. Neither are traditional number 9s.

 it'd be hard not to. And I don't even particularly dislike Wood, he's just Shola mk II.

 I said I get the impression that they do, which I do - whether they're playing along with the joke or not is by-the-by, the point is that the dislike for Edwards isn't an exclusively N-O thing.

No idea why you're simping for him tbh, I think many wouldn't have a problem with him if despite being personally unlikeable he was a professional with a good track record, but he also has a very poor track record (The takeover, Bruce, Botman, Elneny, Nketiah, looking like Joao Pedro) which gives his arrogance that extra undeserved edge to it and makes the defence of him look a bit odd.

It’s simply because when I read his Tweets and articles I find them balanced. I am able for example to accept his original Tweet about our budget (£40-50m iirc) and then except his follow up Tweets a week or so later (that the budget had increased to £60-90m iirc) and the reasons for them both. Same as except him saying that his information was we were clearly in for Pedro but the deal was in play which until now unless I’ve missed anything it still is. Unfortunately we’ve a lot of fans can’t and I personally think they are thick because of it as does Edwards so I guess that’s where we align. I was reading on here only days ago about people banging on about him getting the budget wrong. 1hr is a long time in the transfer window never mind days and weeks. Things are changing all the time. I

If you haven’t got the intelligence to realise in the transfer window that the goalposts are constantly changing, as are targets, as are demands, as are squad needs, as are other teams exact same goalposts which in turn affect our own then you are always going to struggle with reports from the media during a transfer window as they can be rendered out of date within minutes.

Fans who engage with him sensibly he’s fine with and usually bothers to engage back. Fans who are rude and attack him he enjoys winding up or blocking etc. Absolutely no problem with any of that.

For the final time he let his friendship with Steve Bruce get the better of his professional judgment during his time here. I’ve never argued anything else but even then some of his Tweets are ridiculously twisted. For example there was nothing wrong with the Tweet someone posted on here recently by and large. The only point you could argue is the definition of a “good job” keeping us up for two year. Believe it or not but probably a lot of matching going fans think that also. Has he got a good promotion record? Yes. Can you see therefore why WBA would take a chance on him? Yes. Not sure how it’s a stick to beat Edwards with personally other than I would argue he did an average job at best at NUFC but then that was all that was demanded from him whilst MA tried to sell the club and cut costs further so there is an argument I dare if trying to be balanced. Which I always try to be on here. I hope FR is right. I hope we get Pedro. I personally think Edwards is right and it’s not agreed. Doesn’t mean it won’t be any minute, hour or day now. Edwards am sure if he gets wind of it being confirmed from his sources he’ll say so along with other journalists.

They are all right and all wrong most of the time. It’s the nature of the murky workings behind the scenes of football ?

My Watford supporting mate rates him higher than Richarlison at the same stage.

I think most have the intelligence to realise that the transfer market is fluid and everything can change with a phone call.

At the same time there are journalists who have reliable sources within certain clubs and those that don't. I'd suggest if a reporter is consistently wide of the mark, the latter applies.

That's fine, there are plenty who work in the media that don't have great sources at our club and they don't get grief, but Edwards goes put of his way to engage in a provocative and antagonising way. That's not to say he that he deserves abuse, but Twitter is full of nutters, if you poke a bee hive enough times, you'll get stung.

Coincidentally, when he's not reporting on Newcastle, he writes provocative and antagonistic pieces for the Telegraph. It's almost like he does it for social media clout.

Who's arguing against that like? It's Edward's glaring lack of foresight that's put into focus with that scenario, not lack of fan awareness or intelligence as you put it. When he's for example arrogantly arguing to the back to teeth that the budget is X and people are saying he's naive, ridiculous, negative etc or they're coming up with justifiable reasons why he's wrong and the budget will be higher, he doesn't still get to keep claiming he was right all along by shrugging and saying 'things change'

Edwards is a condescending prick who writes for a paper who backs the party that has acted to this region's detriment for decades, backed Bruce to the hilt solely on the basis that they're mates and is on the record saying he enjoys winding the fans up when in the midst of abysmal relegation form under the stewardship of his mate. Hope he fucks off and stops reporting on us tbh.

Aye get to fuck even defending that bald prick like, he’s such a shitty writer too, my boys can spell and write better and as far as journalism goes he’s the pits as most are, the man/Womenchester has no inside track whatsoever. Hope he drowns on a glass of wine!

Um ... guys we need to prepare ourselves for the eventuality that Pedro isn't going to come in and be backup striker right away ahead of Wood.

I know this is what we all want and envisage but I don't think the manager will see things that way.

Hopefully the kid comes in and blows everyone away and can make that role his, but yeah ... don't expect it right away, unless there's likely to be even more soiled sheets due to bed wetting :tongue3:

This is the last time I'm saying this but why would we ever tell our budget to Edwards? How naive you have to be to think Edwards or Hope or any journalist would be given information like that? Edwards reporting it as gospel shows he thinks way too highly of himself. The amount we end up spending is completely irrelevant, he's clueless.

And fuck Edwards, anyone saying Bruce did a stellar job keeping us up while watching the games is an absolute idiot.

As Joan Armatrading once sang, I’m an easy rider when it comes to this kid, I haven’t seen anything of him other than YouTube and what you’ve posted, same with most players we are linked with. So if we don’t get him, I, not fussed. We desperately need at least two quality attacking players in though and if we don’t add them this will be a failure of a window by the club. I’m confident, however, and I hear we have a medical booked in for Friday, 3.00pm…

Mind, based on what I’ve seen and researched, yes please. He looks a real prospect and who doesn’t love a Brazilian in our colours!

By all accounts from Watford fans this lad isn’t even a striker

he’s the deep lying forward/ false nine type, so the post above about comparing him to Firmino sounds about right.

“He is a versatile forward, able to play anywhere across the front line, starting so far under Rob Edwards as the focal point of a three. “He’s best centrally in a trident with two forwards prepared to make runs behind defenders,” explains Roy Hodgson, Watford manager during the second half of last season. “Then he can drop and be a deep-lying target player.”

“Give him freedom to float,” agrees Eduardo Oliviera, who oversaw Joao Pedro in the Fluminense under-17s. “He wants to be part of the game every time. He’s not only good in the box, he’s good at building the game.”

I will be honest, I never watched him much. All I saw was some Youtube videos, a few articles, and his stats breakdown. I can see that he could play as a lone striker (false nine) where he drops deep to receive the ball or attracts defenders to create space for the wingers and attacking midfielders to score.

This system can be very prolific if we play him as a lone striker (false 9) and sign a winger and a midfielder who are great in front of the target (Harrison and Paqueta/Maddison for example).

He can also play as a deep lying forward next to another forward, and that means Howe would go back to his beloved 4-4-2.

I can understand why some folks here are worried about his low number of goals. But if his role is to become a false 9/deep lying forward, then scoring goals becomes his secondary objective. Another point is that he’s still 20 , and he played most of his career at Watford, here I am hoping he could work on his finishing and improve it if he comes here. CR7 for example improved his goals/game ratio dramatically after he turned 23 or something. Pedro isn’t CR7, but I mean he is still raw, and his ceiling might be high based on what I have read.

I’ve never understood the saying top drawer - why is that drawer better than the other two?

i keep my jeans in the bottom drawer so surely that should be my best drawer.

Because it’s usually the knicker drawer

Where does the saying top drawer come from?

Answer: In the olden days in England, a woman's dresser-room would have a hierarchy of drawers. The top drawer was where they kept the jewellery and valuables. The saying is, therefore, linked to being high-class.
