From what Howe is saying, Isak has manifested a situation where his mere existence around his teammates reduces our chances of winning matches.

 

Therefore, to me, the safer play is to (regrettably) engage Liverpool, maximise the fee, and send him on his way. Buy two new strikers and let's crack on. 

 

The alternative is brinkmanship; we shield the rest of the squad from him until such a point that he decides to apply himself. The earliest that happens is probably after the transfer window has closed, several games into the season.

 

Option two honestly seems more dicey to me at this point, particularly seeing as he'll be well off the pace if he ever does accept that he needs to do another year here.

We’d still be able to get mega money next summer (£130m+). Palace held out for £70m last year for Guehi with 2 years left on his deal. Press on and sign 2 forwards and let him sweat. We won’t like, but he definitely doesn’t deserve his own way.

I am not sure Newcastle are in as bad of a situation as portrayed here and in other places.

 

Liverpool are desperate for a striker. They’d be worse off not getting Isak than Newcastle getting one or two strikers + not selling which makes the position fairly strong.

 

They’ve lost 3 attackers this window and  only replaced with 1. Plus Salah will be away on afcon. They absolutely need to reinforce right now.

I think NUFC have to be seen to acting reasonably. Howe and a mature/non-petty approach helps. So reintegrating back him into the team with limited fanfare would be helpful if he doe stay until January/next summer when a non-derisory offer comes in.

 

Hopefully the fans follow the lead of Howe.

I just don’t see how that is the safer play, unless they do pay what he is worth to us? And even then, it still sends a message that players can force a move with shitty behavior. Hardly brinksmanship when approaching it from angles other than his cash value. What’s also very valuable to the club is making sure that their other best players don’t start doing the same, and that giants like Liverpool shouldn’t bother with unsettling our players because it plainly won’t work. Levy dealt with a somewhat similar scenario on the club’s terms…as should we. Getting something below their valuation because it is a bothersome situation is absolutely self destructive.

tbh it's not even the money for me- it is selling to Liverpool - just cannot do it under any circumstances.  Getting Ekitike and Isak? Club gotta come out of this with some dignity.
