That’s the modern forward, though. Target men basically doesn’t exist at top level football anymore.

I think it doesn’t even have to be a “target man” as such, personally.

Even just having a fit striker ahead of him helping pull defenders away from Isak so he can use his intelligence and touch to find that extra space and make stuff happen.

Isak shouldn’t have to be “leading the line” like he has been. It’s a huge waste of his obvious talents. Keeping him way up the pitch, incredibly isolated, is not playing to his strengths.

I still insist that Isak would be better utalised as a 2nd striker around a target-man. He's so effective picking the ball up deep/wide and driving forward.

Not many clubs play with 2 up top anymore. I think he's fine up there alone but needs more support from a cam type. The wingers also need to stop being selfish and look to pick him out more instead of cutting in and trying to shoot. Would also be nice to see more of us playing him balls into his feet as opposed to spamming through balls. I'm convinced he just needs a cam to play behind him and Gordon on the right to supply him. He's done fantastic considering the lack of service and having to play multiple roles at once + being the spearhead of Eddie's pressing system. He's wearing a lot of hats and I think Gordon on the right and a proper cam who can link the cm to the attack would be amazing. Alternatively we could sign a proper CDM and free up Bruno to be higher up the pitch and play a more advanced cm role.

He's right though. The number I've times I've seen us finally get to the byline and cross it, and there's no one in the penalty area. Sometimes not even Isak as he's the one crossing or he's dropped deeper to start a move off. A goal scoring AM who would steal into the box would help a lot. Also with the wingers cutting in so often or ignoring the overlap, there's not much for a striker looking to get on the end of stuff. Shearer would be going apeshit with that sort of service.

Oh I know he's right, I was referring to all the lingo he was using. CAM, CDM, spamming through balls.

He just needs service, our wide men don't offer him that as they lack innate playmaking attributes (both Barnes & Gordon are shoot first, sub optimal passers).

Look at how different Haaland looks with or without De Bruyne, not one for one but a similar problem.

Luckily, he's able to create for himself & make water out of wine but with half-decent service (and staying off the injury list) he crosses 20+ goals a season with ease.

I think if I was in charge, given the players we have I'd play Big Joe as a No. 10. I really think Isak needs someone near him to get the most out of him, and he needs to be free to float around and get involved in the game. A system like this [mix wingers however you want]:

                          Isak

Barnes            Big Joe           Gordon

             Bruno               Tonali

I think Bruno and Sandro seem perfect for ye olde double pivot: both are DMs who like to get on the ball and dictate tempo. Both like to get forward, so here one can go forward and the other covers, at their discretion. Instead of a system where our DM is also our main attacking playmaker so we have to leave ourselves open on the counter to allow him to attack.

Big Joe's then there to provide a physical presence further up the pitch. He's played well there in a more defensive role (eg 4-1 vs Brighton) & he's good at the back to goal, hold the ball up with a defender on his back and bring people into play thing, which is exactly the part of Isak's striker game that isn't good.

It gives us two players to play it forward to through the middle instead of one, and would allow Isak to drift around and do whatever the fuck he wants (which I think is when he's at his best) while still maintaining a presence in the middle. Kind of a withdrawn target man role, but with a proper striker ahead so we don't have to rely on Joe actually scoring.

We really struggle to move the ball forward through the middle of the pitch, we're so reliant on whacking it long down the channels, and with the players we've got that would be my best attempt at solving it.

You could try Willock in the No 10, I think he and Isak have a decent understanding, but he's a bit similar to Isak in playstyle and I think Big Joe & Isak would compliment each others' strengths and weaknesses better. Could maybe give little Joe a go on the RW.

Big Joe doesn’t have the touch or awareness to play in the hole. So many plays would breakdown through him (as they currently do).

Kind of disagree on that, I think he's got pretty strong game intelligence. He's certainly not the ideal type of No 10, but when he does have a bad touch it's far less dangerous when he's higher up the pitch.

Haha the the first 2 terms are just normal. But spamming through balls is definitely fifa lingo. I'm more of a football manager guy though. Fifa is lame.

No chance Big Joe is a 10. I’m not sure he has any of the attributes you’d want to see in that position.

Id agree. Maybe asides from holding up the ball with his back to goal and laying the ball off wide or back. He plays with his head down a lot. We need someone who's got his head up and can pick a pass. Honestly it would be easier for us to move Bruno forward and sign a holding mid.

When he played through the middle one of his worst attributes was receiving the ball with his back to goal.

I'd try Hall as a 10 in time.

Actually now that you mention it I remember that. I guess I'm thinking of his winning the ball and recycling possession. Usually much deeper though.

Hall has every single attribute needed to be an advanced playmaker. I remember reading a Chelsea forum when we signed him and they all said he fancied himself as a cm. Id LOVE to see that experiment. He's always looking for a progressive pass. He's quick. He can dribble a bit. Strong little frame can handle challenges. Imagine if our left back of the future turns out to be our 10 of the future hahaha. Almost like Jow being our record CF turning into a class box to box or ball winning mid.

or we could just leave him to continue developing at left back where he is progressing well and he can be ours and England's locked in left back for the next decade?

Feels like there are a considerably more options out there for attacking midfielders than there are finding good quality left backs.

he's so so good, but at the same time can be way too casual with his finishing

that one on one in the first half was a terrible finish, and not the first time (Chelsea away and Brentford last week he was also too casual)

thankfully it didn't cost us today against a very poor and understrength team

needs to be more ruthless, hopefully it's something he can improve on

don't mean to be too critical, he's still our best attacking player, just think he has a lot more in him and could become a legendary player and Ballon d'Or contender
