It’s a bizarre rule when you think about it; a Brazil squad player would have issues that a regular international for the Cook Islands might not.

 

Luckily, every South American player ever happens to be eligible for a Greek/Italian/Spanish/Portuguese passport.  Phew.  Oddly enough, this doesn’t seem to be the case for all the other non-footballing S Americans.

It’s irrelevant what the level of the league is, just the level of the player. Anderson isn’t a PL player right now as per his (limited) appearances. We don’t know about Kuol until he gets here.

The rules do actually take into account the ranking of the national team, a player playing 30% of Brazil's matches in the past year would automatically qualify, a Cook Islands international playing 100% of their matches would only get 2 points towards the 15 needed to qualify.

 

To qualify by national appearances Kuol will need to have played in at least 40% of Australia's matches where he was available for selection in the previous 12 months before the application. I think they'll need to get to the quarter final with him appearing in every match for him to be over 40% in January.

Using the example of Garnacho (again) who came over after Brexit from Spain without even any Under 18 caps at the time. How would he be allowed to play but Kuol, Commonwealth citizen and full international wouldn't?

Bearing in mind how new on the footballing block he is, it'd be interesting to hear how he came up on our radar and we made the move so quickly. Doesn't seem like the was a crowd of similarly aware teams after him.

Not saying he wouldn't, we could apply for an exception for a talented youth player, he just isn't likely to qualify by international appearances by January.

He put in a dominant performance against Barcelona when he was 17 in an All Stars game. Xavi spoke extremely highly of his performance. There were rumours that Barca were one of the teams looking at signing him.

There were a few, including stuttgart, barca and Celtic but NUFC offered him a ridiculous wage ( for a 17 yo ) and showed him a proper career pathway. They wanted him the most and all kids in Oz grow up watching the EPL. All his dreams come true plus a World Cup!!! Those odds for top scorer are very juicy indeed

This lad must be delighted with our form and what the future might hold for him. Hope he shines in the World Cup and shows what he can do (again) against players with more top level experience.

I think this is definitely the case, hence the possibility that he will go out on loan to a Euro club.
