Fucks me off that we got the group of death and Villa got this format.

you were unlucky, really unlucky with that group, and we are lucky this format guaranteed more games and more variety.

We still had to do something to finish top eight though. We were pissing it and hadn’t conceded a goal from open play until Mings had a brain fart in Bruges, too.

Annoying period of inconsistency we are in though.

Ollie Watkins sums your recent form up pretty well. So good, but also kinda bad.

Fair play Brummie - 8 matches in and to finish in top 8 is still quite a feat - not Villa’s problem who they faced

So is it 9th v 24th 10th v 23rd etc then or not?

Seems to be that way but then there is some sort of draw on Friday? Seems stupidly overly complex. Should have just split the middle teams in to 4 pots, top 4 teams would be drawn against bottom 4. Middle vs middle then just do a normal free for all draw after that. Finishing in the top 8 should just be a bye to skip a round.

Edit

Actually it might just be a free for all draw? Just with two pots for the next round.

The new format, with all the teams ranked together in a single league, will mean that there is more to play for all the way through to the final night of the league phase.

In the knockout phase, the teams that finish between 9th and 16th will be seeded in the knockout phase play-off draw, meaning they will face a team placed 17th to 24th – with, in principle, the return leg at home. The eight clubs which prevail in the knockout phase play-offs will then progress to the round of 16, where they will each face one of the top-eight finishers, who will be seeded in the round of 16.

To strengthen the synergy between the league and knockout phases, and to provide more sporting incentive during the league phase, the pairings of the knockout phase will also be partly determined by the league phase rankings, with a draw which likewise determines and lays out the route for teams to reach the final.

From the round of 16 onwards, the competition will continue to follow its existing format of knockout rounds leading to the final staged at a neutral venue selected by UEFA.

Surely this laid out wrong? It must mean 21 Celtic vs 11 Real? Why would 21 play 22? Surely 22 would play the third highest ranked team? Hopefully its just a bigger draw vs this nonsense.

I think it means one of 21 or 22 will play one of 11 or 12.

Worth remembering, who we faced included Bayern Munich  - who hadn't lost a match in this 'phase' for decades - and Juventus.

Yeah exactly - and that is what any Villa fan will say about him.

His goals scored and assists totals are brilliant - but he misses so many good chances.

We have had two problems this season - defence is the bigger one, no doubt, and currently we've got one fit CB so that suggests that is going to maybe get worse - but also, not taking our chances, and Watkins spurns so many of them.

Don't get me wrong, Brumms, I love this for you.

I loved our group last year - it is exactly what I'd wanted.  I got to see us play AC Milan, Dortmund and PSG.  We weren't going to win the thing; much better to play against the biggest names in club football.

Do agree. I'd have swapped Dortmund for a Red Star or a Copenhagen mind...

Red Star would've appealed to me - as a kid that midfield of Prosinecki, Mihajlovic, Savicevic and Jugovic was the best I'd ever seen.  Red Star still have that 'big name' feel.

Yes and would have been enough to get us into the next round including the psg points to face another big name

last season was so unlucky for many reasons but looking at Spurs and Man City and others who are struggling with crazy injuries Howe did very well. Iraola is doing even better

Same, was absolutely buzzing with it. First time back and the chance to play those 3 teams was perfect. It was injuries in the end that cost us going through not the opposition.
