The bloating is a deliberate problem, but it’s a problem.  I can get misty-eyed looking at the last ever ‘true’ European Cup QFs in 1991 (before the competition introduced a group stage):

Three Eastern European clubs (two of which went through - one of them actually won the tournament).  It looks surreal today, but used to be the norm.  It’s all become a bit asinine.

The fact Eastern European teams are no longer a factor in European  competitions is, for me, one of the saddest things about modern football.

That great Dynamo Kiev side of the late 90s with Rebrov and Shevchenko is probably my favourite non-NUFC team ever. The great thing about them was they were largely homegrown, unlike the later Shakhtar Donetsk and Zenit sides which were full of second rate Brazilian mercenaries.

Part of me says fair play to them for coming back like that when they were on the verge of of going out. But fuck me to think this side might win a trophy and get CL with some of those knackers in that team. In fairness Amorim comes across quite well but I cannot stand Fernandes. Rio Ferdinand ducking droaning on last night on commentary too “this is the greatest night in football” 😂 oh fuck off

Look at it from this point of view.

They won the cup meaning we didn't qualify for Europe allowing our players to get more rest. Resulting in us winning a trophy and sitting 3rd in a very strong position with 6 games to go!

That’s the spirit, glass half full

Not getting into Europe should be viewed as a sliding doors moment that put us on the path to silverware

I’m delighted we weren’t playing away at Tinpot FC in Outer Wankekistan on Thursday nights and could focus all our attention domestically on finally winning summat

What a disgusting scene to wake up to

It was absolutely typical, brainless from Shaw, nailed on to go out, careless penalty given away and then the game completely swung and Lyon were in the ropes with the man advantage counting. Absolutely typical that hammer head bangs in that last header. The Mainoo goal was pretty good to be fair.

Hilarious all those cunts who walked out tho 😂

That Man Utd game just reminds me of last season 4-3 under ETH against Liverpool. Built as a big turning point, but most people outside of Man Utd knew it was the end days, followed by continued poor league form.

Trophy at the end that just papered over all the issues.

That was yet another embarrassing French performance. They seem to just buckle under any pressure.

Aside from that, a few questions

- why did Toliso get sent off? I couldn't see any touch at all?

- how was that a Casemiro penalty?

- foul for the final goal?

It's still annoying as fuck that they're picking trophies up yearly when they're meant to be a laughing stock

Followed the mayhem on here last night but only just caught up on the highlights. Aside from my utter dejection at what's happening to that competition, my main thought about that game is: is this really where we're at with commentary now? Is that really what viewers want? And, if so, how many spikes am I allowed on the mace I'll use to batter them with?

The slide to having club 'representatives' on comms has quickened a lot over the last few years but even the more obvious cases hold their professionalism to some extent. Last night felt like a shark jump. Any vague pretence of neutrality was utterly absent and it shouldn't be like that; it's basically not commentary any more.

Made worse of course by the voices themselves. Not sure you could find two bigger melts than Ferdinand and Savage.

Been saying this for years, getting Carra or Neville screaming "Get in!!!!!" when their clubs are playing against yours isn't what anyone wants to hear.

Remember when Ray Wilkins (RIP) did commentary on Chelsea games and would refer to the players by their nicknames when he was a coach there.

Next step is to get the YouTuber cunts involved.

Derby vs Luton at 12.30 on Sky is a really big match.

Luton will be at least 5 points adrift (of safety) if they lose, with only 3 games to go, but a win would take them level, and potentially more in touch with the sides directly above Derby.

Punditry has really degenerated to such a horrible state, whether it’s organic or whether they want this as it’s good for clips, I don’t know but it’s horrible. The girl who does co comms on BT, I think Lucy? She is actually really good and one of the only ones I like listening to. Very knowledgeable and actually seems happy to be doing her job. Last night was reprehensible.

They spend loads and pay loads. How it works in football, you will win trophies eventually.

Just the real top ones (Prem / UCL), you actually need to put consistency together against sides that have equal spending power at the top end.
