Doubt we’d hear as much downplaying (kind of) about the EL if we were winning it

We'd have to be deluded not to, even if enjoying the moment. They're playing bloody Freiburg.

Honestly can't believe what I've been reading. Is this what one League Cup has done to us [emoji38]

I mean that's really not the point at all. I'd feel the same way about these competitions regardless. Though I'm definitely relieved we broke our duck with that competition as opposed to a Europa.

He is, but he could have handed over management to Gabby Agbonlahor tonight and Villa would have cruised it [emoji38]

Yeah this Freiburg defending has been something else [emoji38][emoji38]

100%

Freiburg are absolutely fucking shit. An indictment of the quality of this competition that you've had the likes of Manure and Spurs last year and this lot this year in the fucking final

CL is the only European competition worth being in - the new CL format has killed the Europa League

I’d still love to win the Europa mind. Had some great times as a kid watching us on C5 then as a teen on the lash for UEFA/Europa games.

Fair play to Villa and especially Emery. He fucking loves this competition.

I imagine the Villa players will be delighted too.

Probably should be taking that into account as well, as it will absolutely matter to players.

If we want to keep good players and keep attracting more of them too, we probably shouldn't be turning our noses up at any sort of trophy.

Just for context, this was the run of finals between 11/12 and 19/20

Good point TBF.

By the same criteria, what were our good performances this year in the Champions League? Evidently none of the victories, which all came against meaningless opposition, nor the draw against Leverkusen who are one place above Freiburg in the Bundesliga. I guess the 1-1 draw in a virtually meaningless tie against PSG? Or are we still waiting for our commemorative shirts and DVDs for being totally annihilated by Barcelona but almost matching them for the first three-quarters?

I'd agree with you if it wasn't so obvious how poor the EL is right now. You can't ignore it, it slaps you in the face.

It is a weird one. As a fan, I'd love to be in this competition. Loads of class away days and we'd have a great chance of winning it.

It does nothing to help my football apathy though. The financial superiority of the Premier League and the expansion of the European competitions makes English dominance an inevitably. Every decision, made with an endless thirst for cash, eroding the integrity of the game.

I mean, we got to a QF and were thinking about finals even with the CL drop-outs under Pardew/Ashley and even before the CL drop outs Lazio, Spurs, Lyon, Bilbao, Inter, Napoli, PSV, Fenerbahce, Athletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool were in it - and its hugely diminished from even then now.

Just allow far less teams into the Champions League, problem solved.

True, Bilbao, PSV, Benfica, Union & Qarabag were utter dross and didn't pose us a single threat. It's not a good reflection on the state of the game tbh.

Two problems solved. From a sport, quality, fan point of view. So the opposite of solving a problem to the powers that be.

Almost like the old format was fine as it was and we didn't need a Super League after all :)
