Wolfcastle
Said it before but there was no way PSR was going to help fans when clubs are limited to spending by whatever their revenues streams are. It gives clubs the perfect excuse and frankly justification to milk that for every possible penny when other avenues (success, owner investment) have been stopped. It didn’t help fans purely because it gave an excuse to clubs to fleece their own fans. Ticket revenue is negligible when it comes to impact on PSR. Charging extra £20-£30 brings in what, like an extra £2m-£4m? Absolutely fuck all to clubs, but £20-£30 is a lot to a fan. They couldn’t give a fuck and as long as fans stay quiet about it (or in quite a few cases for our a lot, go into bat for it) it’ll keep on happening. The excuse can be completely justified now, that's the difference. Owners cant be blamed for not investing to take a club to the next level and with clubs having to maximise what's available to spend as a duty, they're often going to risk PSR punishments, many have gone close, so the extra few millions probably aren't insignificant now like they were. It's a grubby truth of the game that the arms race for 'the best and brightest' on the pitch always required someone to pick up the cost. When sponsorships need to be 'means tested' and traced back to source club were always likely to start passing that cost onto the fans. The Premier League is perhaps the worst example of those, but the snake has been eating itself for some time (a problem arguably enhanced by the likes of Abramovich and Man City). Must be nothing to do with Villa being ambitions but having their hands tied then and must be some other reason clubs want to expand their capacities. Nobody said they were the answer just that its perfect justification for doing it.

Also if the ticket prices go up they could provide an even larger part of overall revenues.

In 2022-23; Liverpool’s income was £594m of which £79m came from matchday income (13% of their overall income). Manchester City’s income was £713m of which £72m came from matchdays (10% of their overall income). Aston Villa’s income was £218m of which £19m came from matchdays (9% of their overall income). Crystal Palace’s income was £180m of which £12m came from gate receipts (7% of their overall income). Nottingham Forest’s income was £155m of which £11m came from gate receipts (7% of their overall income). Brentford’s income was £167m of which £11m came from matchdays (7% of their overall income). That’s matchday income altogether so tickets as well as food, drink, hospitality etc. Revenue from general admission tickets are a tiny part of a club’s revenue. An extra £20 is going to mean fuck all to the club but it means quite a bit to fans.

Without any proof of it whilst not at home I’d wager our general admission tickets have gone up about 20 quid in costs stadium wide in the last couple years. If it’s £58 for the cheapest tickets for a category A game now it’ll be likely well over £60 for where I usually sit and I was paying £49 for category A games in 2022-23 iirc. An extra £20 is going to mean fuck all to the club but it means quite a bit to fans. The main problem for me is that as football supporters as a collective/community we do fuck all useful about it and don't help ourselves. Part of the problem being that we all know that if loads of us boycotted games for pricing reasons there'd be someone else willing to pay it, so FOMO to an extent overrides it, we pay anyway, and the club wins. My first sentence is why things like #StopExploitingLoyalty get on my nerves, probably unfairly as they're right in what they say. Aye the FSA and supporter groups can stand there with a banner and it looks good on socials but ultimately what happens after? They go into the stadium to watch the game with the ticket they've paid £X for, so it amounts to little more than virtue signalling. The clubs and TV companies know we'll keep going anyway which is why they continue to take the piss.
