Is that the game he fell out with Robert the night before?

Memories of a Steven Carr disaster class as well! If it’s the game I’m thinking about, it’s anger over sadness for me

My memory fails me. It just remember thinking we should’ve won if not did the injuries but in retrospect we were never going to amount to anything under Souness. He was in the process of gutting Robsons side.  He let Bellamy go on loan that January, Bellamy would’ve killed sporting.  Think Bellamy ended the season our joint top scorer despite leaving in January.

Dyer and Jenas were killing Sporting with their pace and athleticism. Think they both got injured in the game and that was that.

Year before was the crusher for most I believe. Surprised we got as far as we did in anything under Souness

Does us being in the Champions League guarantee us home ties in certain rounds of the League Cup next year?

Or was that just for this season only?

The whole thing was a farce as I recall... 🤣

Not home, but it gives us bye for simply being in Europe, and the stage we enter at is partly seeded so that we don’t draw any other team in Europe.

Dropped Robert for the Second Leg because he said something in the press about it being a poor season.

Which has been the case for decades now

No it hasn’t. Having the bye for a round has been, having partial seeding so you don’t can’t play other teams in Europe in the round that you enter hasn’t been until last season.

With the new format and seedings could well complete the set of playing the big boys with Real Madrid and Bayern or we could get a scammy Villa Europa league run and get to the Quarters

I'll take the later for the money and clout, we had the 'welcome back' group with big boys already.

It’s really the tale of two teams taking opposite gambles.

We gambled on not signing players and limping through the season with a thin squad.

Villa rolled the dice on high risk but high yeild loans and some expensive January recruits (Onana, Malen & Disasi for about £75m).

We could have probably coped without CL (may have lost some players) but I think for them it’s much bigger hit.

At the end of the day they brought in Rashford, Ascencio, Malen as attacking recruits and still got outscored by +14 by us and Chelsea. They’ve got no one to blame but themselves.

Got a feeling in my bones we're destined to play Real Madrid next season. I can't recall ever playing them in my lifetime

Still never got over Partizan drawing prime Galactico Madrid after they knocked us out in the qualifiers   :icon_puke_l:

aye, I wonder if Europa league is worth what they spent. Might still be, especially as they likely would be out of Europe entirely without the contributions from those lads.
