In the last 25 years, Chelsea have won it twice, Liverpool won it maybe 20+ years ago under Houllier, and Mourinho won it with Man Utd. That's it. 4 Champions in 25 years. jonny1403 Posted May 19, 2023 Share Posted May 19, 2023 The main point of the playoffs in the Champ, L1, L2 etc is to ensure there aren't a load of meaningless games in the last third of the season between mid table clubs that are too far off the top two but not in a relegation battle, so have nothing to aim for. That isn't an issue in the PL because 5th - 7th are still battling for Europa League/Conference League. Why add three more games to an already packed schedule when players are gassed enough as it is at this stage of the season? There's still plenty of big games in the usual round of fixtures, especially given there are at least 6, now 7 'big clubs' who are constantly playing each other plus the competitiveness of the rest of the top ten. They really have created a self-perpetuating system in as many ways as possible. West Ham have basically gotten themselves Europa League level earnings by getting to the Conference final.
