And when the directors are telling us we're going to win the league within 10 years it kind of throws that statement (that one small group of fans decided to make) right out the window as expectations hit a hard reset.

Completely agree - we didn’t set the expectations; they did.  No-one forced those statements - now they need to deliver or come out and tell us that something has changed.

And of course the ‘we don’t demand’ banner wasn’t speaking for all of us.  Never liked the sentiment behind it - it’s ’the glory game’ - I want to win things.

Still wouldn't. 8-10k more seats wont make up that difference. Its achillies paradox anyway, by the time we've got closer, they'll have increased their prices and maintained the gap

Unless Newcastle are going to be allowed to compete for the title, I just don't see why the Saudis would invest £1bn in a new stadium. I've said this ad nauseum for ages now, for them to do it, it has to be a vanity project. As an investment it just doesn't make sense. Why would you spend billions to finish 6th?

The PL and their paymasters, the cartel clubs know this very well, that is why the rules keep changing specifically to stop us spending money on title winning players.

It was an important sentiment at the time, when we were rotting from the inside out and apathy was setting in.

It's still important now, in that I don't expect us to win anything but I'd like to go into a match with hope and ambition, rather than all the delusional Geordies expecting to win rubbish.

«We don’t demand a team that wins, we demand a team that tries»

Or has it become the other way around?

It remains as it was, it just got very slightly extended: "We don't demand a team that wins, we demand a club that tries in the context of a competition that isn't fixed to ensure 86 out of 92 league clubs have no possibility of winning it or even enjoying extended periods of competitiveness".

Yep. If they pair down their ambition I would be disappointed but at least my expectations will be managed.

We still have ‘we want to be #1, best in class’ rhetoric but the actions don’t  align.

Like I say, it’s really early days though.  Villa are 3-4 years ahead in their takeover and are reaping the benefits from the academy and a strong squad pre-Emery and the DOF.

As others have said - I’m happy to go through a rebuild.  But it seems the club want to pursue a ‘we are only 1 or 2’ players away mentality. We need to get the talent ID of a Brentford, Brighton, RB rather than trying to sign players from those clubs. I like Howe but he needs to accommodate the DOF model or we bring in someone that will.

But it’s all a learning curve.

More talk from Edwards that PSR will force us to sell in the summer if we buy in January.

Current rules, designed entirely to keep clubs in their place make the whole thing a waste of time basically.

We need to sell anyway and refresh the squad. Stagnation Is a huge part of our problem this season.

Hopefully it's players such as Miggy, Murphy, Longstaff, Burn, Targett, Krafth etc. Although I do know these sort of players are harder to shift.

If Eddie is saying he wants to keep these players then he needs over ruled 1 way or another. Keeping these types of players is exactly what's holding us back.

Is that because we want to spender 100m on 2 PL players?

We need to focus on a rebuild with youngsters imo.

Yeh we are going to have to sell a purple buddy.

I don’t disagree that we need to let go of some of those players. But it’s the purples that will give us PSR space.

I also think we need to change our entire transfer approach.  And change our goals and plan.  A lot of our squad building issues are driven by the requirement for European football

Considering we were willing to spend £65m on Guéhi, I struggle to see how.

Unless we end up in the Champions League places, I'm 95% sure we'll be selling one or more "purples" this coming summer regardless of our PSR position.

The issue is that if we have to sell before the PSR deadline, we're putting ourselves in a weaker negotiating position.

I believe the PL isn't far off reaching it's peak (if it hasn't happened already) Same clubs winning all the trophies for 25-30 years (with the exception of Leicester) and now you have Man City who are winning PL titles in a row, trebles, etc. It will become boring and people will switch off. Champions League is already going the same way.

Arsenal played Liverpool at the weekend and normally, I would have been bang up for watching it, but instead - I booted up FM and listened to it on 5Live. It's also rare that I watch MotD these days. Perhaps it's just me though - I don't know.

I think it’s just you. Clubs have huge demand for tickets and TV ratings are setting records both in the UK and internationally. Some of the global viewership estimates, while likely inflated, are staggering.

It makes what’s happening behind the scenes all the more ridiculous because the biggest threat to the Premier League is coming from within.

Yeah I agree. I should have said "in an ideal situation" this is what we need to do.

I do see 1 or more of our big players leaving this summer though.

That’s a really bad idea though isn’t it?

Unless we’re saying we can sell one world class player and sign 2 or 3.

I mean, if we have to sell to avoid a points deduction then that’s one thing, but from a league position and points POV you’d have to expect we’d be worse off.
