American owned clubs getting away with murder. Chelsea arsenal man united getting preferential treatment thank god for city highlighting these and taking them to task.

Quelle surprise. They need to be locked out of English football, they’re Japanese Knotweed to our entire football pyramid’s existence.

True but was gonna be that or selling bruno or gordon

Probably aye. We could have avoided having to sell from a position of weakness by not overspending that season however. Harvey Barnes as a squad option behind Gordon in particular looks like an expensive luxury we maybe couldn’t afford in hindsight.

What has poor Barnes got to do in order for people to stop peddling that line?

When we signed Barnes it wasn't like Gordon had been any good either

We'd also sold Maxi, who at the time was our best winger (Gordon had down nowt). It would have been ridiculous to not sign somebody of Barnes' quality and profile.

We just got a bit unlucky that Gordon decided he was almost exclusively best on the left.

Nothing. The comment holds true regardless of how well Barnes does. We had to sell in order to avoid a points deduction because we overspent. I actually like Barnes and I’m happy he’s here, but nobody can convince me that spending the best part of 100m on two left wingers was the best possible use of funds in our (PSR) situation at that time. Mistakes were made sadly, and arguably Amanda paid the price.

It's only because of FFP that we have to even consider signings like Barnes as so called mistakes. Barnes has been a success mostly, if we were allowed to keep our players like Minteh and not be forced into ridiculous swaps like the Anderson/Vlachos debacle, we'd be in an even better position. FFP has been terrible for us, whatever benefits it might have had for other clubs.

Barnes added £10m (max) to the p&l last season, Sandro about the same.

We only just passed the loss limit through selling both Minteh and Anderson, both of which were £15m plus.

So even without buying Barnes we'd have had to sell them both, at a push maybe held onto Anderson but it's not a given

Again this belies the reality of the situation at the time though. When we signed Gordon in Jan 2023 he had played the  majority of his career for Everton on the right. He was signed for NUFC primarily as a right winger - you can see that in the documentary when we are signing him as his position is highlighted on the whiteboard. He only had fleeting appearances for the rest of that season as his fitness was miles off.

Barnes was a direct replacement for Maxi as left winger. The following season when Gordon got up to speed after coming back from the Euros it became clear very quickly that he was better on the left cutting inside. So we've ended up with two very good left wingers and unfortunately neither never look properly convincing on the right.

The idea that we deliberately and wastefully signed two expensive left wingers is disingenuous. You could argue the talent ID on Gordon was slightly off, and we've suffered because of that.

That deal looks a lot worse for us in hindsight.

Had we been able to keep hold of Anderson, he still wouldn’t of been starting for us.

He’d obviously significantly improve the squad depth of the midfield, but at least this season anyway, that wouldn’t have made a huge difference.

Might be different be a bit different with European games next season like.

This...

All players being available Anderson would never have been a starter for us or developed in the way he has for Forest.

And I reckon Barnes playing every game for us on the left would have produced more goals and assists then any of our other wingers... But still not be accepted.

One for us oldies but Ruel Fox scored twice as many goals as Ginola but you will never hear anyone say he was better player.

I agree with all this but I think, regardless of how we pictured Gordon, having quality attacking options in depth is priceless and absolutely what a team gunning for European places/trophies needs. If it wasn't for Man City phoning in the cup final then you could probably point to the West Ham 4-3 as the turning point which jolted us into a European place, and his contribution this season requires no validation.

Your point is right. I still think the original plan was Gordon to be our RW though. That IMO was the fly in the ointment.

Wasn’t aware we bought Gordon as a right winger. Fair enough if so. Odd that we haven’t played him there more if that’s what we thought we were buying.

Who said that?
