Weird how a winger new to the club taking pens. Assume he is super at them to be given that role?

Or the coach wanted to see how he handles a little pressure.

Arne Slot has been very complimentary about Yankuba.

When it was announced in June that Yankuba Minteh would play for Feyenoord next season, it came out of the blue for many. By now, everyone at the club is familiar with the qualities of the quick-witted winger, who is presenting himself in fine fashion during the preparations.

At Voetbal International, trainer Arne Slot and teammate Alireza Jahanbakhsh talk about the Gambian Newcastle United loanee.

Slot is very pleased with the way two young wingers in his selection, including Minteh, are showing themselves during the training camp in Austria. "Yankuba Minteh and Leo Sauer have made an excellent impression for several games now. There are more guys who are doing fine, but those two have really shown it this week. These are guys whose development we are going to follow with a lot of interest."

Minteh was acquired by Newcastle United from Denmark's Odense BK for seven million. "If you see what Newcastle paid for Yankuba, of course it's not very surprising that it's a good player. Those are amounts, with us it would be a record transfer!" said Slot about it.

Upon the Gambian's move to the Magpies, it was immediately announced that he will play for Feyenoord next season on a rental basis. "Newcastle supports their players very well. But if you get a young player for that money, you obviously have high expectations of him and then you want to support him well. And that's why it is such an excellent choice of Newcastle that they put him at a club where many young guys have been very successful the last two years. In their development, I mean."

So with his good play in the preparation, Minteh has found himself in Slot’s good graces. That the winger will start the season as a starter is therefore not out of the question. "Certainly, every player who shows himself and especially: every player who shows himself week in week out is eligible for a starting place. We did see these weeks that Yankuba is competitive."

That's crazy that Minteh would be their club record fee like.

The financial difference in our league and theirs is insane. Their record signing is Hancko for €8m, basically the same price we got Minteh.

Yep. Their total club income for 21/22 was around 60m- they only get around 8m for TV rights etc. Miles behind Ajax and PSV too. They seem like a well run great club these days (nearly went bankrupt in 2010), especially with Slot as manager. There’s a great article in The Athletic for anyone who’s interested- sounds like a perfect club for us to link up with.
