Because he’s neither a poor footballer nor a world class one (and I never thought his form was ‘world class’ at any point).  World class footballers don’t have extended periods like this.  He’s a really good holding midfielder who has peaks and dips in form.  ‘World class’ for me means he’s arguably the best in his position - he’s that level just below it.

edit: by way of explanation, if you’re writing out a list of the world’s top 25 midfielders, Tonali is definitely in there with a shout.  If you’re writing out a list of the world’s best 5 midfielders, no-one is having him on that list.

Alright, but it seemed like you were saying he’s overrated and not that good, not that he’s arguably one of the top 25 midfielders in the world

If he took a first touch more often he might improve the accuracy of his passes, the first time pass is a weapon when it comes off for speedy counters but the success rate has dwindled to next to fuck all

I remember lots of us thinking we had the best midfield in the PL and one of the best in the world. For me that changed on the night of 18th September when I sat in awe and watched Barcelona's run rings around our three!

Wouldn’t mind seeing how he got on at right back with Miley back in midfield.

Think his pace and physicality would be great bombing up and down the wing and he’s a decent crosser of the ball. Might benefit from the additional space too in terms of his passing.

If we definitely want him to ask for a move we should do this.

I do think that at one point we did (the league, don't remember anyone saying the world), but it was largely due to a superior physicality across all three of them that other teams have since caught up with, stamina, and a good but not great level of technical ability.

let him ask for a move then? Because he’s no use to us at the moment in midfield.

Be serious man, of course he's of use to us. He's in poor form on the ball but he's working hard and he's contributing. Asking him to play RB is just silly and won't help anything.

it might help us win games? Poor form on the ball is a fairly big issue when playing at the base of a midfiel I think Miley would go better in midfield than he is currently and I don’t see Tonali having problems at right back.

He may see his arse a bit but players better than him have been asked to play out of position for the team before and will be again.

If it was to lead to him asking for a move after we supported him following his ban, then he isn’t the character we thought he was is he?

Zero chance Tonali will be played at right back… never going to happen and nor should it…

ok he’s having a dip in form but it’s not like he’s playing absolute shite… it’s just the high standards he’s set previously and the expectations we have…

He was probably top 3 CM in the league earlier this season. I don't think that was a case of out fans overrating him too. Most neutrals seemed to have him in that conversation.

The problem with our midfield for me is they often don't perform as well as a unit as they used to and we rarely seem to have them all in form at the same. At the moment is seems to be Tonali out of form but Joe and Bruno have both had similar poor spells this season.

He's had a bad illness, just had a bairn along with a hefty fixture list. Can't say for certain but chances are being physically and mentally fatigued may explain things rather than he's just turned shit and never been as good as some of our fans claimed.

Bruno never has poor spells, just poor games. He's been our best player consistently this season (as well as Hall, obviously).

The rest of the team just isn't functioning. All players are looking a bit shit. Tonali looks like he's had a loss of confidence, but I reckon all of the team are equally frustrated about their performances.

Also we weren’t in Europe so everyone was closer to their physical peak and had an advantage over clubs in Europe.

When we get back to 1 game a week some of our physicality advantage will come back.
