NUFC Transfer Rumours

Recommended Posts

Also as said before, the market for him if he wants to play at top end and challenge for trophies is not big, because Arsenal / Liverpool will want to go with a more sure thing.

It’s really only us, Chelsea (if they don’t go abroad for their striker) and Villa if Watkins moves on IMO. We’re in best position and got the selling point of multiple players going onto playing for their country having joined us.

It’s just an expensive luxury signing for what we still need to do to squad, bit like Barnes buy, but one I would still want to have done because he’s such a talent and a proper striker. Say he was £40m, RW £40m-£50m and Trafford £20m. That feels best part of our spend done unless we go real balls deep and drop £40m on a CB too. Feels one of RW / CB would have to be a £10m mark buy.

Yeah good point. If big money was spent, I'd rather it was on RW > CB > GK > ST. And I'm sure we can't go big on every position like you said

Delap, Isak and Osula would be class like. Though wonder how we'd give Osula a chance / enough time

Why do people think Delap won’t want to be second choice to Isak? He’s 21, surely he would learn a ton from one the best strikers in the world and being coached by Howe. It’s not like he’s 26-27 and first choice at a top or even middling club. It would be a great move for him? Whereas David I understand to an extent

All of this.

We will have plenty of game time for the new striker with European footie added in. Having 2 top tier strikers shouldn't be an issue for a top 4 team. Most have had 3 or 4 atthe same time over the years.

While the money is on David going to somewhere like Barca, even given David's form and pedigree there is no guarantees on a starting spot at any of the biggest clubs. Especially when changing leagues/country.

In the case of Delap there’s no way we would pay the money for a backup anyway.

Agreed. Jonathan David makes way more sense from a PSR perspective. Delap would make me think that Isak was going.

I think we’ll need to re-evaluate the word “backup” if we’re going to regularly be in Europe. Accounting for injuries, end of game tiredness and rotation, someone like Delap could easily play in 40+ games next season and he’d probably start half of them. I’d rather we have someone good doing that than an Osula type who the jury is still very much out on.

Thank you.

I don't get it either.

If we make it into the Europa League at a minimum, I even think David would consider it too.

That year both Wilson and Isak were fit, Howe rotated them and also played them both at times, and we weren't even in Europe! And they were both doing so well.

I really miss the old school Prem when it felt like every team had multiple strikers on their books.

To be fair, I wasn’t ruling us out of signing him with my comment. I was just pointing out that we will need to be able to give him real playing time to develop him at a good pace, and with European football it’s a possibility here.

But yeah, the fees for these two players will prove difficult for us I agree. Dibling especially. I don’t see us signing David.

It’s not just that they’d be rotated, either. I suspect that if we signed Delap and Isak stayed they’d be on the pitch at the same time quite a lot.

Our system has looked as much like a 4-4-2 this season as it has a 4-3-3, particularly out of possession. Murphy plays far deeper on the right than Gordon does on the left, with our LCM being asked to do a lot of the hard work in covering the LB.

Suspect Isak in that Gordon role playing off a CF would look dynamite. So rather than rotating with Isak, you’d have a situation where Isak, Gordon and Delap are sharing two positions, which with European football next season would mean more than enough minutes to go around for all three of them.

I think on balance signing someone who is very versatile and can backup Isak while also being comfortable playing wide would be ideal, but if they go after Delap at the price he’ll be it’ll be because they think he’s going to add a lot to the team beyond being Isak’s understudy.

If we had 100m to spend what would people’s transfers be to give us the best chance at 4th or above next year?

Trafford

Antonio Silva

Mbuemo

Then use the Kelly - Miggy - Longstaff et al money to fill in FB, CM, CF slots

I'd indeed explore the "free" transfer market for the likes of Jonathan David (long shot), Angel Gomes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jonathan Tah and Kyle Walker-Peters (signing on fee and/or higher wages will mean there is still a significant layout) in the hope of plugging a gap or two for a relatively low outlay like we did with Kelly last year.

I'd also explore the loan market for loans with option to buy for top talent rotting away on other club's benches (like Arda Guler, Ansu Fati, etc.)

Depending on how much that leaves and which positions we still need to fill I'd then go for Trafford (20m), a RW (30-40m) and a RCB (25-30m). I don't think the likes of Mbuemo, Huijsen etc. will be reachable with our restricted budget and list of positions to fill, so we'd have to rely on Paul Mitchell earning his corn here.

Also I'd like us to continue to strengthen the academy. January was a bit disappointing in that regard. We need to build that conveyer belt of players that we can bleed into the first team in years to come or sell at a profit to fund investment into other players as a matter of priority, so I'd reserve a good 20% of any budget for that alone.

Would love to see a young attacking midfielder brought into the mix that offers something different, think we’ve got Bruno, Miley and Tonali who can all play as the anchor man, crying out for a difference maker to add some creativity in certain games.

If we qualify for CL and Longstaff, Wilson etc leave, think we need 5 players including a keeper, CB, CM, RW and CF.

I'd be surprised if we're not linked with Guehi again. You don't spend a full summer bidding £55-65m, then ignore the same player when he's likely available for a bit less than that the following year?

I suspect he'll go to Chelsea or some such and probably end up spending his days on their substitute bench. I hope we look elsewhere in any case. Didn't think he was worth what was touted and he hasn't exactly changed my mind this year.
