NUFC Transfer Rumours

He spends an hour a week answering the same four questions. Could you be arsed?

At least Hope’s weekly nonsense is a bit more exciting and can have a bit of new information (which is usually bollocks).

Waugh has taken some of the bad Chronicle habits with him (“5 things we learned about…”). Between him and Mark Douglas at The i Paper there’s barely a nugget of new material between them.

I can understand the Barnes links. He’s at peak resale value this summer, and if club thinks Cordero has big potential for LW, an offer of £45m+ for Barnes makes them tempted to use that to sign a CM (with Joelinton / Osula the back up LW for one season) with new RW on other side.

Unless we really need the money I don’t understand selling Barnes

We need to sign this summer and next:

GK / RB / CB x2 / LB / CM x2 / ST / RW

As we’ve seen in previous windows being restricted to make buys, there’s absolutely no doubt to fund those buys people we regard as key players will need to be sold.

I could see it; especially if he isn’t content to compete with Gordon (who I think is a better player). I like Barnes, and would be happy to keep him. His contributions and his stats are good this season, but I don’t quite think he is at the level we want. I think we can do better. Too many unforced errors/heavy touches for me to be clamouring to keep at all costs.
Barnes, Willock, Longstaff, Targett = £80m+ l; add to this an estimated £100m currently able to spend, and we could be pushing the boat out this Summer and pulling up trees next season.

I don't think we need all of that at all. I don't see a world where we sign 9 first-team players for a 25-man squad. We've got a winning culture in the squad, we won't look to revamp it in one summer window.

GK (with one leaving)

RB - no need to buy here unless Trippier is leaving. Krafthu is staying another year.

CB - only need one. Schar, Botman, Burn, New CB, expect Lascelles to stay on too.

LB - Maybe if we sell Targett or it's a free transfer. Why would you spend money on a third choice LB?

CM - again probably only 1 if we think Miley can step up. Expect one of Longstaff or Willock to be sold - not both.

RW - Yep there's an open squad role for that. Might also need to play ST.

ST - Only think we can get someone if there's a great deal to be had or a free transfer. Why would you spend big money on a back-up striker?

Been linked with Besiktas striker Semih Kılıçsoy in the Turkish press.

I can't say I know anything about him.

He said the next two summers i think so trips, schar, burn, lascelles may not get another rolling year. Targett is into his final year from next season? Willock and a few others will have shorter deals by then. Without extensions can see two summer windows of big change. Budget and wheeling dealing needs to allow multiple window investment.

We'll likely play 50+ games next season.

Barnes will get lots of minutes. I expect we'll have 5 first-team attackers for 3 positions. The non-preferred 2 will play loads. Darwin Nunez is the 6th choice attacker for Liverpool - he's played 22 games in full worth of minutes. Making 45 appearances. Curtis Jones is the 4th choice CM, he's played 25 full games worth of minutes.

It's going to cost £40m to replace Barnes. And that player will need time to get Howe'd. I just don't expect a massive turnover of players. Unless we have to because of FFP, which I don't it will. CL is £50m minimum these days. Then we can exploit FMV to our advantage with new deals.

I've been told, categorically, that Barnes is NOT FOR SALE and DOESN'T want to leave. They're trying to build a squad here.

Obviously that could change, so don't shoot the messenger, but that's how it stands today.

In the Ashley days it was first-team and then backups.

In this era it's stars and first-team then backups. With like 4 backups for each area of the pitch. Not 8 or 9 backup players, that squad can't compete on multiple fronts. You need about 18 first-teamers. The top squads in the PL have about that.

At the end of the day, Gordon and Barnes are going to get plenty of game time next year, whether we're in Champions League or Europa. There's no need at all to sell either.

Completely agree, with City arguably having two 11's (just underperformed for whatever reason this season).

We're now in the realms where you buy new purples, and the current starting 11 member to drop out becomes your bench first-teamer. Not backup.

People just haven’t got used to having/needing a squad because we’ve never been so competitive and on so many fronts. They think that the second someone isn’t first team every week then they’re not good enough and need to be sold.

We need another 3-4 positions this summer (at least) where new additions make those positions as strong as the left-wing spot We need a Gordon/Barnes situation in multiple areas rather than taking away one.

I think we know we need a squad, we just find it hard to accept that the subs are actually going to be good enough that they could be starters.

Won’t happen for many reasons, but boy would I love a statement signing like Tijjani Reijnders. I still think it’s massively important that we get another CM even though he won’t be the one.

World class CM would be my priority too along with RW and CB. Joelinton is awesome, but can’t really rely on him when it comes to injuries and consistent performances. Bruno also have some periods where I’ve felt he could have had use for some competition for his place tbh.

We're not signing a "world class" cm. Not many of them even exist.
