For me it isn’t mainly just because of breaking up a low block. It’s a lot about ball retention in general and controlling games as well as conserving energy in different phases of a game. Not putting unnecessary pressure/energy on defenders and defending in general.

Murphy is one of the worst wingers in the league for simple ball rentention.

I would be delighted if his replacement matched him for G/A.  That bar is high. But for general play, there’s a lot of improvement to be made that will lift our entire game.

I'd certainly take Ramsey at that price. Can't see them selling for that, despite needing to trade. He's definitely a talent but does seem to be very similar profile to Willock? If we could shift Willock for say £20m and get him for around £30m I'd shake hands on that for sure.

He could be the long term solution for Joelinton. Get him on board now in preparation for a £50m sale of big Joe to Saudi in a few years time

Yep. Probably the main reason I don’t fancy Elanga that much. He doesn’t really change that particular thing much. We need to improve in this area, and if we can do that here and there and get some better depth then we go another level up.

I think if Villa need to sell then vultures will be hovering over Morgan Rogers first and they might have to deal.

Ramsey at 29m is very good business. Does sound too low.

Assume Rogers won't help them as much as selling Ramsey due to him not coming through their academy

I love Harvey Barnes and his output particularly this season but I would support him being the sacrificial lamb this summer.

Realistically if selling Barnes and Willock meant we could get Ramsey, Pedro, Elanga, Guehi and Trafford all though the door that would be a great window and leave us stronger overall.

You would no longer have two nailed on left wingers but you'd have players like Pedro and Ramsey who can play that side as well as other positions. Elanga is a player who can go over to the left as well.

But who's going to match him for goals and assists and also have much better ball retention?  It's not like he passes the ball to the opposition often.  A major part of his lower ball retention is due to the fact he tries crosses and shots.  Easy for wingers to retain the ball more if they risk possession less but they aren't likely to get near him in assists in that case.

We have to everytime we go behind at home. And we have struggled to do that under Howe quite a few times.

We need attacking players that win their duels 1v1. Murphy and Almiron for example dont do that. That is why our attacking play too often is about crosses. That is not a very good way to break low block.

Aye, but just looking at last season we were 12-2-5 at home. 6th best home record. I agree, more technical ability could help break those teams that sit back, down -- but i think the real answer is raising the quality in all aspects to play multiple styles or play our main style, better.

I like this answer more. It's about evolving and elevating the play. I do not want us our our fans to simply think we should be a possession team and become pass masters - that is not in our DNA.

Murphy was electric last season, but it was pinned a lot on his elite-level crossing last season. Ideally, our next step is we find either a better crosser, a better wide forward, or a better dribbler/passer. And any combo of all of that will hopefully evolve the play.

We actually collected more points from the teams who finished 14th-20th (39) than anyone apart from Liverpool (40).

The problem was the 10 points we picked up from teams finishing 8th-13th, only the three relegated teams got less than that.

Man Utd, West Ham, Palace, Brighton, Bournemouth, Fulham - I'm no tactical mastermind but I don't remember those sides just parking the bus and us being unable to break them down?

Edit - sorry it was Brighton, Bournemouth, Brentford, Fulham, Palace, Everton

Another great post. It was that maddening lay-down job between 8th and 13th where we got ran over by Bournemouth and Fulham. Were ass at home and away v Everton. Were ass away at Palace. Were ass at home v Brighton. In half of those matches, had we taken a chance or two early on (Isak, Gordon....) be a different story.

It's been done to death but it's so shit that any club who wants to make the Champions League and stay there have to sell their promising home grown players to stay afloat

Not sure I agree with that mind. The ball bounces off him quite easily, especially if he's under pressure. Don't think his first touch is all that.

Barnes still has a book value around £25m so not a lot profit to get from him.
