I think players and agents know what our wage structure is and they are put off joining us as they know they could get 25% more from the other big clubs. This has been our problem when trying to attract top level players. We now need to be looking for players slightly below these who may develop that have more realistic wage demands Exactly. We want to shop in this tiny pool of elite or nearly-elite players, and yet were trying to pay max £120kp/w like it's 2015, and act surprised and blindsided when players fuck us off to live in London on £210k a week. Like, haway, I realise this and I'm a known divvy. Edited July 19, 2025 by Izakaya

If we’ve not got the pull of ‘the 6’ despite CL football and we’re not prepared to pay what players of that caliber are getting, then we should adjust our strategy a little. It doesn’t mean signing shite, but small group of targets everyone else wants and is prepared to pay more for, isn’t likely to be all that successful. Constantly being rejected and being seen as last resort if ‘the 6’ don’t want you doesn’t exactly do much for our reputation either.

Whitley mag
Starting to look a bit of a clusterfuck this window, can’t fault the ambition, but unless they’ve got a b list of targets I can see us ending the window really short.

We even had 2 goalkeepers on the bench a couple of times. With CL we are going to need more depth, cant just go after purple players imo. We saw 2nd half of last season how little our bench would contribute in a meaningful way. Ousla only one that by end of season looked like he would, but that was from being an unknown. Take the bench that nearly cost us UCL final game, the lack of game changers on it. Dub, Lascelles, Trippier, Kfrath, Miley, Willock, Longstaff, Osula, Wilson Tragic stuff. That’s the level that needs raising and should be after multiple years into this project now. Shivers thinking about going into a UCL campaign and our 9 man bench ends up looking like: Dubs, Ruddy, Botman, Trippier, Targett, Willock, Miley, Murphy, Osula
Kimbo
I think we’re at the point in the window where they should be getting together and agreeing it isn’t working and the situation needs rescuing.

Adam P
Signing elite players who can start for us absolutely improves our bench. The new player starts and the weakest of the starting 11 goes to the bench. The starting 11 is good enough for 5th and a Caraboa cup so that weakest player is great squad depth. Yes but you can't keep just signing elite players. We can't sign any elite players at all at the fuckin minute anyway.

Ideally that's absolutely what we should do and seems to have been the strategy with Elanga and Pedro/Ekitike but as we've seen, we're competing with clubs bringing in substantially more money than us. Aiming a tier below could still massively improve our depth across the board and if we're targeting players in Germany, France, Italy, maybe even the Championship, we are more likely to be the most attractive destination for those players. But there’s also the likes of Tino / Hall who raise the bench bar and can become starters quickly. Trafford is easily that, but there’s others across Europe / UK for the bench too of a similar mould. If we’re being honest, it’s probably just the CB that raises existing XI bar (replacing Schar), rest is depth and variations to how we approach games / during games. Well sure, but we probably cant afford to sign 4-5 elite players this summer. Which should be the minimum that we need to fill up the squad, especially now with Longstaff being gone. mattypnufc
Currently in a worse position squad wise than the end of last season. This next month is absolutely pivotal otherwise, and I’m not one to panic, the season will be a potential write off. Squad isn’t big enough or good enough to compete across four competitions. Frustrating window so far, however despite obvious hurdles chucked our way (both internal and external), I’m genuinely shocked at how poor we’ve seem to have prepared for this ‘massive’ window. Arguably if Eddie isn’t given the tools he needs and has made very clear, I can see him potentially fucking it all off.

Personally think the fault lies more with Eddie being to little flexible about the players he wants in. I dont want us to overpay for the players he has set his sights on.
