Targett is far better going forward on the left but that won't be the role on Sunday. Tino will not get out of his own half you'd imagine because leaving Salah V Burn is just suicide and his role will almost entirely be to keep Salah quiet - easier said than done but he's probably the one in the squad I'd trust most to do it.

 

If we're behind, sure bring Targett on.

Not sure why he didn't just try a few more crosses with his left. The one to Trippier for Barnes chance was sublime. Even if it doesn't come off perfectly it can still create chaos in the opposition box.

He’s a really confusing player. Played a ton at left back last season and looked assured at both ends. Last season he attacked space from the right. Killer 1 v 1 defender. This season he’s half asleep on both ends at times. He’s got the physical gifts to be the best!

It's really frustrating watching him in the final third this season, left or right. He's overly safe and passive and just kind of exists in great positions without really wanting to do anything. Great example today in the first half when he played a pass to a tight space on the edge of the box but didn't move for the one-two thinking he had already done his job. Needs to be more decisive and trust his skills more, everyone knows he can be electric on the ball. Thankfully he's still really solid defensively and this is hopefully just drop in form on possession and something that can be worked on considering his natural talent.

I was surprised how poor he was operating on the left in the opposition half. Didn’t realise how reliant he was with his right foot, it stopped him overlapping which is a huge downside for us when we break.

 

Trippier is far more suited and used to playing there and I reckon Tino’s pace could be used to match Diaz. Tripps is going to have a long afternoon no Mayer which side he plays. His experience and sledging may be of more use against Salah, so long as he avoids an early booking. Barnes is going to have to work his bollocks off tracking back.

I think he was better second half and despite some of the issues with him playing there. He is our best option at LB for the final and the foreseeable. 
 

Seen a few mentioning that Trippier would be a better option there? On what basis? 
 

Less help for Burn defensively, he’d get less help from Barnes in front of him that side would be massively exposed and too reliant on Joelinton. 

 

We’d be back to Murphy and Tino on the right. Attacks break down all the while with those two and a general lack of quality on the ball from both. 
 

Also, I have it in my head we moved Tino to LB mid-game a couple of times last season. As Trippier was so bad there. Dortmund away against Adyemi I have in my head as one, for sure. 
 

Finally, have people watched Trippier at left back for England? He stops and plays sideways or backwards even more than Tino does there.

Tino should 100% play LB on Sunday. Although Hall was brilliant in the game at Anfield, I would still say that defensively Tino is the best bet against Salah than anyone in our squad. My main concern on that side would actually be Barnes defensively against Trent and as a result them overloading Tino at times. Hopefully that is where Joelinton will come in!

Feel like I would have been happier going into the Liverpool game having Targett on the left and Tino on the right, but Targett hasn't really had time to play himself back in form. Tino and Barnes combo seems to offer no width at all, although the goal did eventually come from a cross from the left, but even that took some invention at the second attempt.

We've seen that Howe quite often has one of the full backs attacking with the other being more cautious and making up part of an effective back 3. I wonder if that factors in at all.

I am clinging to the lack of quality in front of him, how young he is and the fact he missed a full year of football through injury means he's still learning and can develop.

Not as easy to tell from the camera angle in the second half.  But I thought he stayed wider and it helped Tino. 

 

First half, Barnes seemed noticeably narrow.  Out of possession, it was almost back to that 4-4-2 shape, with Barnes pressing up with Isak.  On the ball, he was often infield offering Tino the overlap, which he never really tried and looked massively lost and isolated out there.  It all got a bit congested with their flat back 5 and flat 3 in front of that.  

 

Second half, it seemed a bit more traditional, Tino was a bit better and we had more width. 

 

Hard to judge, really.  As they had so many men behind the ball and that really doesn't suit many of our players.  As I said in another thread, that doesn't suit many teams, TBH!  But we really do have a lot of athletes who thrive on open spaces and a game that is stretched.  We're a free range team, if you will  

 

We'll get that sort of game on Sunday.  The problem is, we are starting to look very creaky and exposed at the back and that's where we're likely to come unstuck.

A lot of frustration with Tino's turning back and playing infield, particularly to the cb,s is that he doesn't play to feet but behind them, so causing another player to have to face his own goal rather than being able to make a quicker pass forward.

This thing about playing the ball behind the man you are passing to, it had me really frustrated for the first hour. Not just Tino, Murphy and Burn were doing it a lot as well, it really broke any fluency in our game. The midfield as a whole were the exception, all three of them were doing a decent job of playing it forward where possible.

He was tidy but he was so good going forward at Southampton and for us early on that I would like to see more of that. Much rather have him having troubles going forward than defending though.

Tino shouldn't even be focused on attacking on Sunday. Should be basically a 3rd CB and watching the likes of Salah. Let Trips push up and make some intelligent runs and crosses.

his remit is to try and keep salah quitet.

anything we get in the attacking third from him is a bonus.
