Out of interest when is a good time to offer a new deal to any player?

2 years? 3 years? Final year? Does it depend on how much they came in on or how they performed?

I understand the want to reward good players and to offer them terms that keep them happy.

However seems like a job when  there is a management team in place to do it not when we are struggling to bring players in.

Throw in that often an extension comes with a release clause which could well see the club get well below market value.

Release clauses need to be fucked off.

Ok let me spell it out for you then:

We have some elite players. The Sky 6 want all our elite players. They are using the media to unsettle our elite players. Players like Tino have improved vastly since we signed them on their original contract terms and is now a star PL player and a star England player. Man City will offer him far advanced contract terms and we need to be able to match that to thwart off their advances. We can't just keep players on their original terms and expect no issues when other clubs are telling their agent how they're going to triple/quadruple their wages. Part of the reason the Isak situation is the way it is right now is because we broke his trust over a new contract on vastly improved terms.

Well broken down but other than the rumours saying city want him I have seen nothing written to say he's unhappy or wanting to move.

I get the concept of giving the best terms possible to keep our better players but we already know when it comes to wage whatever we offer won't be enough to fend off the bigger clubs.

Just don't like the timing is all have no problem with our good players getting deals in a summer where we want to bring players in I would still be parking it as he has 3 years left.

Botman has 2 years left he will also need doing its part of ongoing club contractual maintenance but as I say we have no executive structure to spend the time brokering this sort of thing right now.

Being as kind as I can, the current recruitment team we have are at best naive and at worst incompetent at bringing in new players. We should do our best to keep the elite players we actually have.

Additionally, any extension to his deal now will further spread his remaining transfer fee from a PSR sense, so would be a small boost in the short term you'd imagine (depending on how much the wages will increase).

Agreed  but I hope you understand my underlining point unless there is an unhappy player or a release clause to delete under the to do list I wouldnt include resign up Tino contracted until 2028.

If things were running smoothly and full team were here then yes put it on the sporting directors desk and say get it done but right now the desk is empty and Howe needs to do the deals and coach the team and prepare for the new season.

3 years left on his deal not sure we need to spike our wage bill for  him already with that long left to go unless his current contract is so poor it would make him consider his future.

I see Paul Mitchell has joined the forum

If you dont agree with my point that's fine but not sure its the same thing. I am  not saying he doesn't deserve a new deal, shouldnt get a new deal or we shouldnt offer a new deal my issue is the structure at the club has 2 position down and a Skeleton staff.

The Isak situation was very different 4 years left but we had agree to sit down for contract talks and then it was reported they couldn't come to a resolution so park it until the summer. As its being reported now it appears that decision to pull out was a Mitchell one which could well bite us in the arse if the player didn't agree to it.

For Tino its to fend off interest but we dont have a team to broker it and do have lots of other pressing needs such as 3 new players to bring in and targett and the Greek keeper to peddle etc.

Nobody learns anything on this forum. Every fucking club with a sense of a brain ties up players to longer term deals on higher wages to stave off interest and protect themselves. Its our thick and stubborn fans who want to pay whatever we can to get X player to then turn around and wonder why you don't renew contracts for some of our gems.

Tino is a logical deal. He’s one of the key players moving forward and should have wages that reflect that.

Lewis Hall will be same next summer when he gets back to fitness and delivers what he was doing last season.

When he’s become arguably the best English RB and LB in the Prem / country - now in other words

Making some assumptions if we added another three years I think we'd be able to offer an extra £90k/week and "break even" as far as PSR goes. Anything less and it's improving our immediate financial position.

Love how a cartel club just asking about one of our players magically inflates our wage bill

Just highlights the Sisyphean type shit we’re up against here.

Tino's one of my favourite players tbh. I could well believe a cartel club is in for him. I wouldn't believe it if was Murphy or Krafth.
