Think he will get an extended run at LW even when Gordon is back.

Eddie is big on merit and the fact is that Gordon hasn’t been in the best form and then went and got stupidly sent off, something that was a huge factor in us being knocked out of a very winnable cup competition. Barnes on the other hand was most recently a significant cog in one of the most important victories in the history of the club.

I think there’s still a decent chance Barnes gets moved on in the summer but right now it should be his position to lose.

There are certain players that Howe will allways prefer as first choice, even if the backup did well while he was away. For example Burn straight back at LB last season when Livra was doing well there. Barnes was benched at the start of the season during a run of form, since Howe wanted Gordon back at his preferred position. Maybe things will be different this time though, lets see..

Do we need to sign a backup LW in that case?

I think the idea would be to sign a more versatile player rather than a strictly backup LW.

The issue is that Gordon and Barnes both seem like they can only play LW. In a world without PSR, us having Gordon and Barnes rotating at that spot would be ideal. But it’s still a balancing act in that regard unfortunately.

I think if you sell Barnes (or Gordon… we’d get a lot more for him) you use the money to bring in someone with a bit more versatility. Ideally sign a LW who is also comfortable playing CF. Or maybe you sign a CF and use Isak left at times, though I’d prefer the previous option.

Could sign another CM option with Joelinton playing left when needed. Osula seems like he’s better suited to playing wide rather than through the middle, left would suit him better too you’d imagine. Sanusi might be sniffing around the first team soon enough also.

I think ideally we’ll keep him and have two very good LW options. But I can see the logic in him being moved on to give us PSR wiggle room.

There's also the issue of how Barnes feels about it. He'll get plenty of football next year but when push comes to shove I think Gordon will be the one in the starting lineup for bigger games.

Really don't see him leaving, especially now we're in Europe.

Just don’t see him starting enough games, he will rightfully be a expecting to start most weeks.

He'll be going nowhere cannot see us selling him. And why should we?

He's different to Gordon not as quick but is a threat and intelligent and most importantly he scores goals.

I'm thinking more him than us. Howe has always said he will listen to players if they're looking to move on

If we sell him I’d be devastated.  With European games next season we need a squad.  If Gordon has injured his hip I am relaxed let him recover and let Barnes have a run.  He is part of the legends of 25 and I’m here for it.

Remainder of the season is a free hit.  We are already in Europe it’s just a matter of which UEFA completion we play in.

Murphy is more effective on the right than either Barnes or Gordon imo

We don’t know as neither had a sustained run but from limited sample I’d agree regarding Barnes hence what lead me to my post.

If you want Barnes in the team it must be the left IMO. If Gordon could improve on Murphy on the RW then so be it.

The truth is Gordon is out of form so doesn’t start either side for me.

Should definitely be looking to keep him, as he offers a goal threat in most circumstances.

He's been unlucky getting injured at time where he either looked like he was in a good run of form or when he had a chance to play back to back games.

Circumstance has led to Barnes having an opportunity to grab the lw spot, rather than him forcing his way in. I do think he played well in the final, not quite the fantastic performance some were getting carried away with, but certainly did more than enough to start the next game

Another "problem" for Barnes is that Gordon barely ever gets injured. As long as Gordon is ready to play, he starts (atleast up until this point). Again, it's that awkward bit where we wish Barnes was an RW with an excellent left foot instead of right foot.

  • 2 weeks later...

Very intelligent footballer with his flicks and build up play totally different from what gordon offers.

Glad we have them both at our disposal.

Brilliant for an hour. Seems to really link up well with Tino and Joelinton.

Totally nullified on the right. I get it was needs must tonight and Willock would always go left. But everything that makes him great is a strength coming off the left. But he can’t really use those attributes on the other side.

As good as he's been, he's deserved/should have more goals and assists lately. Not a dig at him as it just seems bad luck a lot of the time, but the goals and assists will be flying in soon if he continues in the same way.

He has 2 assists in 3 games to be fair. Heavily involved in a goal in the cup final as well.
