I’d be quite concerned if we start next season with those two making up the bulk of our main front 3 tbh.

Bingo.

Woltemade hasn't showed hes anywhere near deserving of starting in our side, let alone building the team around, although Howe might develop him further. Barnes is a great finisher but isnt good enough to play up front or on the wing for where we want to be because aside from goals the rest of his game is ordinary.

Id sell Barnes, but that's with the massive caveat that we actually have viable targets to replace him.... then again, id sell half our squad on any given day.

Firmly against selling our only reliable source of goals because he’s not Desire Doue in general play. I think people massively undervalue putting the ball in back of the net and how hard that is to find. As ever there are many, many, many problems in the squad before we get to upgrading Barnes.

If we sell Barnes as well where will our goals come from? Selling Gordon and Barnes in one summer is crazy.

Hopefully from new players. But it’s a big risk. I don’t think we should sell Barnes.

7 league goals, 3 in the FA cup and 6 in CL, not always starting and being moved around or dropped for AG. I don't trust nepo nitwit and co to replace that without spending the entire war chest.

Marry Barnes, fuck Gordon, kill Elanga.

I did put ‘if’. I’m not suggesting I think Howe will go with that or that he’ll manage to get the best out of Woltemade.

I feel like we have a lot of positions of need to fill. So Barnes as a super sub and £160m worth of attacking talent say on the bench/sold isn’t going to fly IMO.

I’m not sure the club are going to just accept a huge loss on Wolte, Wissa and Elanga. Or them being bench warmers for the rest of their time here.

Barnes needs to stay for another season, at least until we get Gordon's replacement bedded in and we know for sure we can get goals from other areas. We can't keep selling goal scorers and hope someone else can step into those size 12s thats a recipe for disaster.

Let’s sell one of the best finishers in the PL when none of our other players are very good finishers. Sounds sensible.

This one million percent.

Love the lad and knows where the goal is. If Howe hadn't pissed about with him his return would have been far higher.

Ideally this is completely right but if you want us to have sustained spending power over the next few seasons you probably can't let a situation develop where Tonali stays and Tino and Barnes run into the final year of their contracts. Largely because once you take those three out, we don't have many saleable assets (that we'd want to sell - I'm assuming Hall, Miley etc. are players we never want to sell). I suspect the reason we're hearing noise on Barnes is that the club is rightly keeping its options open on how many and which of those three depart.

Selling Barnes to Villa would be utterly mental imo, not 'selling smart', regardless of time left on his deal. We have seen the effect losing guaranteed goals has done to the side. Now Gordon is gone too, and we're proposing losing our last primary source of goals to a side we are directly competing against, and possibly losing ground on?

Selling smart is when it benefits the club financially and presents a manageable risk on the field. If we don't get the recruitment spot on losing Barnes would be fatal. Obvious flaws to his game but the numbers are there for all to see.

I wouldn’t like to see Barnes go, but I’m also not convinced he’ll ever be more than a ‘super sub’ for a good side.  He’s been pretty much the best finisher at the club since he joined, but he disappears from games much of the time.  I wouldn’t be hopping up and down if the club decides to cash in - and I’d also be happy to see him in the squad opening day.

On balance id keep Barnes, selling both him and Gordon is risky, he does need competition though. His contract status is obviously another issue as well.

I wonder if he has a plus 1 year in his contract or we have the same issue as we do with Tino.

You'd think the club would be offering an extension regardless of where he's playing in September - seems daft to let it run down.

Not extending is the play if we plan on selling this window. Probably not the easiest of Contracts to get done either given he's never seemingly been fully trusted and it will be his last big contract.

Don’t get rid. See if he could play as a false 9? I don’t love him as a winger but I think he has always had the attributes to play up top. He doesn’t have blistering pace, but his awareness is better than any of our strikers, he times his runs well, he can score in loads of different ways.
