Any defender who can pass a football always ends up with calls to hoy them into midfield. Almost like you just need to pass a ball to be a midfielder. Bet it wouldn’t take long to search for similar calls for Schär, Mbemba, Alexander-Arnold, Stones etc.

He played all over for Chelsea and we saw he wasn't a LB by inclination when he first came. The game is full of players who can be equally as effective in more than one position or who moved positions during their career, especially when young. There hasn't been a real need. We did start him there a couple of times.
Ronaldo Posted yesterday at 04:45 Share Posted yesterday at 04:45 He’s been very good overall this season bar the odd poor decision in our half which you often do get away with now. I think he’s the heir to Trippier albeit on the left, very much a WB.
Holloway Posted yesterday at 09:46 Share Posted yesterday at 09:46 If you play him in midfield you're weakening the defence with our choice of left backs

Hall was a CM more than a LB at Chelsea through the ranks btw. He has the right ball control for it too. it’s the lack of size /athleticism / aggression that he doesn’t have for CM. arnonel Posted yesterday at 10:07 Share Posted yesterday at 10:07 Football has become a more fluid. He can be a lb in defense AND a midfielder in attack. There are also 100 layers of nuance in between.

AyeDubbleYoo Posted yesterday at 11:03 Share Posted yesterday at 11:03 Doesn't seem any doubt that he'll become a permanent LB to me. He'll come inside to make an extra midfielder at times because he's so comfortable on the ball.

Geogaddi Posted yesterday at 11:24 Share Posted yesterday at 11:24 I was waxing lyrical about him at the back end of last season but then at the start of this season thought he was really struggling , has been class recently though and think he's a future England international. Smal
7th most progressive passer (and most progressive full back outright) p/90 in the league so far. He is really starting to fill the gap Trippier's left in terms of our ball progression. That Schar and Hall are that far up there is really, really remarkable given our poor possession numbers. More boring and less direct. Most of their progression is going through their CBs in Van Dijk and Konate - as seems to be the case with all of the dull control teams. Trent is still providing the most xT for them though. They should probably use him more often. Edited 23 hours ago by Smal

Both he and Howe said he spent last season learning how to play LB, He's a very good technician more than a positionist (yes I've probably just made that word up but it works) and he's young. Didn't Bale start out playing LB so he could see the game better but wasn't actually a LB ?
