No doubt he's had a decent season but thought John McGinn looked like the absolute definition of a one paced plodder tonight

Funny I thought he was the only player that started for them that did their job effectively. Thought he had a good game.

Yeah I agree - you could see how important he is for them.

I just think you’re their Kryptonite. Well-organized press and defence, and pace up front and on the wings. Their defence is so square at times.

You rode your luck a bit but just did enough defensively and they seemed a little out of sync going forward. We battered them at ours but couldn’t put them away and they clawed it back. The difference was that - after missing two gilt-edged chances - you did put them away.

I think Howe just made all the right calls. Realistically there are now a whole group of teams who have a plan and could sort of go either way. Good but not great - you, us, Villa, probably Arsenal. Chelsea too tbh. Liverpool one step ahead, Man City a step or two more. Them and Arsenal have the squad to cope with the injuries and games. You us and Villa are getting there.

I’d put West Ham in there as well.

Masterclass from Howe. Absolutely schooled Aston Villa on how to play aggressive football, and gave them the benefit of a bench full of actual contributing players. One Villa fan in the pub piped up mightily when Watkins scored the second that was ruled out, really enjoyed his quiet vigil thereafter

I’m so glad we didn’t get Tielemans.  I’ve never seen him have a good game.

Makes Shelvey look athletic.

Famous last words but they’ll fade as Yewrup will get in the way.

Thought Emery was quality as usual after the game. Just called it how it was. Classy operator and very much not a cunt. Shame he’s at Davey Cameron’s boys.

Also highlights - https://www.nufc.co.uk/nufc-tv/highlights/aston-villa-a-brief-highlights-23-24/

Raiser sounding morose pregame, bit odd. Enjoyable non the less though.

I wonder if we'll ever get to the level of absurdity of American sports where it's considered "unsportsmanlike" to celebrate a goal too hard.

I think the thought is act like you expected to do that, not, wtf, look what I did! Look what I did!

That said, I'm pretty sure that's just me being old. Jim Brown had it right in American Football. "No need for all that bufoonery".

@brummie easy with hindsight obviously, but why did Diaby start over Bailey?

Just a rotation thing?

He said pre-match he was 90+ percent sure he wouldn't start.

I think he said he was 99% Bailey would start?

So seems odd. But that’s always the dilemma about when to ‘rest’ a player in form. And maybe at home to a side with one away league win all season is a fair shout.

That's what I recall. You are probably right. Terrible away form so he maybe rested him. Bad mistake in hindsight.

Unbelievable result, and a performance to boot. I can’t help but think we were a bit off against Fulham as we were preparing for this one instead. Eddie schooled Emery tonight, absolute masterclass.

Mad reading villa twitter and their forum.

Criticising Emery for playing the same tactics every week. Lots of criticism for cash and diaby. Playing to slowly out from the back etc

They're fucking 4th top

Social media has a lot to answer for when it comes to football

Think you’ll find that just emotionally highly strung human beings in general, and most fanbases would react the same.

Raised expectations and recency bias brings the worst out of fans, we’ve seen much of it on here this season.

Brummie thought Bailey would/should start and hard to argue with that after his performance. Not surprised people are frustrated with Diaby.

But yeah, this place is no different after a defeat.

A performance that just showed, if we had just had a handful of key players available for more of the season we would be having an entirely different season. So important to be able to rotate or tweak tactics when necessary which we just haven't been able to do for the last 2-3 months.

Let's hope we can have abit more luck with injuries for the remainder of the season and show everyone what we can really do.

Although with Isak's injury maybe the curse continues.
