Jurgen Klopp and Pep weren't told by someone else who they were signing, or at the very least were a huge part in their recruitment process. The two most successful clubs in the last 10 years in this country.

It's absolute bollocks that we require some suit to pick players for a manager or indeed pick a manager for the club.

It's quite clear that Howe and Mitchell weren't aligned, therefore it's right that Mitchell went. There's very few circumstances where Eddie Howe should have to leave. He is Newcastle. He should have whatever power he wishes. He's earned that right.

Trippier

Bruno

Burn

Targett

Wood

Pope

Botman

Isak

Gordon

Tonali

Barnes

Tino

Hall

Osula

Kelly

Greek fella (forced on him)

I won't include a few keepers who were on the fringes but at my reckoning that's one hell of a hit rate and even the couple of failures (Wood, Kelly), weve managed to regain money.

If this is the level of transfer we've got to look forward to and probably better, then I say Howe and Nickson are the best bet for the future.

I'm more than happy for the club to have a director of some sort but not if they are going to get in the way of the most important man at the club.

Liverpool’s recruitment actually got a lot worse as Klopp’s influence grew. Man City’s current malaise is a mostly a recruitment failure.

Also fair play to them coming together and deciding that the chemistry isn't right.

Could have easily been a messy fall out but the messaging was good and Mitchell has left in the right way.

It also suggests that there will be transfer movement very quickly.

Every club makes recruitment errors and we will too. I hope we have as many recruitment failures as Liverpool and City.

I agree with this but there are other factors.  Klopp repeatedly never got his first choice midfield options.

Edwards seems great at managing whatever budget he can negotiate and can seemingly get the purse strings open too.  Getting business done super early.  That didn’t happen without him. They would chase players all summer for the player to go to Real Madrid or Chelsea.

So it’s also about being able to manage further up.  Staveley and co. probably had too much freedom financially. But we do need someone that can advocate for the playing squad.

Just on Mitchell saying last year that we should be more "data driven", on what data did we sign Tonali? What data indicates him being good now? He clearly passes the eye test, but unless its a minor stat like sprints or something, I don't think its there in the data.

This sort of thing was always on the cards since last summer so I’m pleased it’s sorted early as I was honestly expecting it to be worse than the 2024 window. Mitchell was saying then he’ll be in charge this summer after Howe led the way last summer (essentially blaming him) and Howe clearly isn’t the type to be in the passenger seat.

Howe, like Keegan, is an old school manager not some wishy-washy “head coach” who will just make do with what’s he’s given. We need someone who will facilitate Howe’s ideas and plans if this is a job role we’re going to keep. He wants this to be a huge window so we need to make sure it is.

A lot of money. He’s not super secure on the ball.  I don’t think he’s ideal for other tactical setups. But he’s perfect for Howe.  Has the personality profile Howe demands. ‘Is willing and physically able to chase down subbed on wingers in the 93rd minute’ isn’t available in the data and not a requirement for many managers style of play.

It’s no accident that the 2 CMs Howe has bought are ‘braveheart’ types mentally although in different ways.

Not too concerned. I imagine this is the outcome Howe wanted. We will make signings without Mitchell

Yeah exactly this, I’m not worried about its impact on making signings this window but we will need someone to oversee football specific operations moving forwards however that role is defined moving forwards.

Never like the bloke from the get-go - and I suspect Howe didn't either. As above, that opening interview was pretty horrific as a way to introduce yourself to your new teams fans. Was just needlessly aggravating.

It was mad. Tantamount to walking in and saying everything was gash before. I imagine if you were Howe or really anyone who worked there in recruitment  it would piss you off.

A glance down from the stands on Sunday offered no indication on what was to unfold next at St James' Park.

There stood sporting director Paul Mitchell just yards from the chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and Eddie Howe. Former Monaco man Mitchell waved his fists in the air in delight after qualification was secured in the Champions League.

Don't forget the club's first domestic trophy in 70 years was being passed around too and that came on Mitchell's watch as Newcastle supremo in the boardroom. But Mitchell himself admitted that he had not had a full pre-season to do things his way when addressing fans at the STACK last year. He also credited Howe and the backroom team for successfully navigating their way from a possible points deduction after the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh. Without those sales Newcastle would have lost points - but that was nothing to do with Mitchell.

The only cash signing of any note on Mitchell's watch was William Osula who came in from Sheff United for £15m. Back in August though Howe said it had been a spot from his assistant and former Blades coach Jason Tindall.

Mitchell's main transfer activity would prove to be the chase of Marc Guehi but he could not get the deal over the line at £70million. Since then it has been about more outgoings but money for Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United and £20m from Juventus for Lloyd Kelly just months after a free transfer from Bournemouth proved good business.

Meetings took place on Sunday straight after the game with Mitchell, Howe, chief scout Steve Nickson and Steve Harper involved. Had their been a difference in opinion in targets?

When Mitchell branded the club's scouting network as "unfit for purpose" it caused ripples in the water. It didn't just surprise the media world but it also left Eddie Howe to defend his own recruitment in a Press conference.

Certainly since Sunday agents have been contacted by Newcastle and potential process and wages have been enquired about. What Chronicle Live has been told is that there has been no bust-ups or no fall out.

Different ideas? Possibly, but Howe quite rightly holds and always did a degree of transfer power and sway behind the scenes. And so he should.

Howe is not a control freak, far from it, he has spoken about collaborations before at United. He does not go out and scout players himself but wants a big say on what deals come in and who goes out.

Finding players that can fit into his system has to be vital but this situation is completely different from Kevin Keegan and Dennis Wise. Or even Rafa Benitez and influential chief scout Graham Carr with the ex-Spurs man eventually leaving.

What happens next will be interesting with a new CEO set to replace Darren Eales soon. Newcastle must decide if they genuinely need a director of football and if they do should it be hand picked by Howe?

The good news is that Newcastle's transfer mission will not be disrupted. Howe pretty much signed Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Sandro Tonali to name a few.

He still has the trusty head scout Steve Nickson on board while Andy Howe works away in the background. The nephew of Howe has been spotted in a club suit at recent first-team matches so could have been taking an overview of what Newcastle need in the next few weeks.

But this should not be classed as anything but a little bit of a reshuffle in the background. Howe can walk on water at the moment after winning a trophy and getting the Champions League.

It's hard to overrule any manager who has delivered so much with three barren transfer windows behind him.
