Klopp wanted Gotze, Edwards pushed for Mane. Klopp wanted Brandt, Edwards pushed for Salah. Klopp has been effusive in praising Edwards and his role in securing those two and other signings.

The disagreement between Edwards and Klopp was over contract extensions to Henderson and Gini. Klopp won one of those battle. Edwards won the other. In public there has been no animosity between Klopp and Edwards.

Julian Wards took over after Edwards and he was definitely overruled with Klopp influence and our recruitment suffered. There is no way Klopp stepped down due to that. He had too much credit in the bank. My impression is that both Klopp and Edwards stepped away as they were burned out and needed a break.

Edwards is not the CEO by the way. Billy Hogan is the CEO. Edwards is the chief executive of Football operations.

Mitchell and Ashworth are solid pros and great appointments. The big difference between Edwards and them is that Edwards rarely goes in front of the press and seeks the spotlight. I highly doubt half of you can identify Edwards in a group photo of random people.

There is a big element of self promotion going on with Mitchell and Ashworth which does not work well with the managers. The transfer committee led by Edwards was an object of ridicule for a long time in the English press with even Rodger’s briefing against it. Edwards did not use the press. He shut up and did his job.

I don’t think I have seen a single photo of Edwards with the PL trophy or the celebrations even though he has been the single most important reason why we have been so successful. Everything started from him.

Yeah key position in the modern game and even the great managers should be challenged from within on transfers.

Still think Ferguson had a part to play in the Mancs downfall by the end with him and his brother signing a pile of shite like Nani and Anderson from Sporting.

What about a keeper, forward and midfielder to cope with all these extra games next season ?

Got it? Mbuemo and Guehi for 110 million, then keep Targett, Lascelles, Willock, and the rest. No total rebuild.

Sell Longstaff, get a replacement. Grab DCL for free, Wilson on a pay-as-you-play, and a keeper for 30 million. That's the squad sorted.

That's 140-150 million spent, only losing Longstaff really.

Wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't happen this summer now Paul's gone.

This just sounds healthy to me. You want professionals who challenge each other with a certain amount of alignment and respect for each other.

If that happened, and it was all Eddie’s doing, cup win and CL or not, he can fuck off.

Edwards is great and is super diligent in his decisions. But he left Slot high and dry in the summer without reinforcements. He’s a smart operator but he’s an ultimate suit for FSG.

Seems they did just fine without any

They spent heavily in previous seasons, and shifted a decent amount of money off their books last summer. Feel like they’re tee’d up for a massive outlay this summer.

Talking about Mitchell if anyone is interested

Filling the void with noise and platitudes to cover for the fact that he, like 100% of the other journos and ITK’s, were caught spectacularly off guard with this one.

None of them know anything.

Of course. But it was a big gamble.  How many other top clubs would bring in a new manager and sign nobody of note?

I think Mitchell’s plans went against what Eddie would want - like almost fundamentally.  After last season, I think PIF were less convinced about that old way of working which is why they changed things up. I think PIF had doubts about Eddie long-term or at least needed Eddie to bend more.

Eddie’s justified the previous transfer approach.  The 2 most contentious transfers - Tonali and Barnes - came up big when it mattered. Spend a little more on what you consider a ‘sure-thing’ profile wise. Eddie has secured the base.

I think Mitchell was a practical demotion for Eddie. Not that he was in-charge before or will be now - but he had more influence. I don’t think he wanted Hall that first season but he was happy to work with it if he got Tonali and the like. Mitchell wanted less influence from Howe with a partial eye on possible successors.  Eddie is the King now.

Interesting insight, and looking at Edwards's career he appears to have worked his way up at Liverpool (after stints as an analyst at Portsmouth and Spurs) rather than come in as a 'big name'. I wonder if we'll go for someone with a bit less profile like him this time around.

When he was at Portsmouth, Edwards had created a database of prospective players and their profiles in a CD. Harry Redknapp complained he was not able to get it to work. Turns out Harry was using the audio CD player in his car to try to get player information.

This is what worries me. As much as Mitchell acted the dickhead with how he handled things he was right about being cost effective. Guehi is a mental signing. He's a decent center back and we almost paid 60 mil for him. Theres a million center backs who'd have within 5% of his impact for half the price or less. Teams around us have signed better for far less. Why would we keep Willock. If he got back to peak form he's still an injury prone player without the technical ability to bring us up a level. A RW, a CB, and 8/10, and a versatile forward are needed. Young squad players would be good. For that we'd want to be finding the absolute best value and reserving the 50-70 mil fee for a player who is going to be indispensable and near guarantee an extra 3-5 losses into draws/draws into wins. Right now Mbuemo is the only player it seems justified on. And those lads you mentioned need to upgraded if possible, downgrades off the bench when we need changes.

I don’t think this is good news. It means that whatever plans Mitchell has made, Howe wasn’t impressed. So what then? Do we start trying to sign a new set of players from today?

I think it's alot simpler than that.  Mitchell isn't one man scouring the world for talent.  Look back to last summer when the press were telling us there was massive disharmony in the club. It's that.

All the drama aside, its canny funny that Eddie came out from a serious illness suggesting he needs to manage his obsessiveness towards work for his own health.

Is now Coach and Sporting director [emoji38]

Didn't listen to it myself, but Hope apparently said the recruitment plans will revert to Howe, Nickson and Andy.

Also, the CEO appointment should make progress over the summer and the announcement of the stadium move is imminent.

Imminent?

His comments that out recruitment hadn't been fit for purpose were ridiculous, our hit-rate with signings under Howe has been incredible.

He didn't say our recruitment wasn't fit for purpose, but our transfer policy. He was right, because we've paid for that policy the last three windows by not having the leeway to buy players and staying within PSR requirements.

Exactly. Two very different things. However people just hear what they want to hear at times
