not sure what the point of this convo is.

The point is that some people will whinge, even if we sign a good player, at a good price because they think we could have got a better deal.

Personally, I like to credit the club for their steadfast refusal to bow to fans who think they know better. Their transfer record is outstanding.

Those Verona Nazis...they didn't want a Dutch player (Maickel Ferrier) cause he was black and the club gave up !!!

No wonder Italian football fell to the scrapheap from being top of the pile a couple of decades ago.

Fair point. Could be dating back to a similar time when Mersey clubs refused to sign black players #Isak.

Back in the good old days when one could be openly racist, without fear of persecution. Now I have to wear a Union Flag, so my friends know ;) without actually saying it.

Maybe overpaid is the wrong word. We definitely paid a premium for him and others.  It’s nearly always been worth it mind.

We paid about the same fee for all 3 of Hall, Livra and Thiaw. I don’t think we paid a premium for any of them, we paid for potential which as we know is the way the market flows these days.. due diligence was obviously done on all of them. That’s Howes way.

I can’t see how a £30m base fee is bad for the potential return on investment you get with these guys, I believe they will make up 3 out of 4 of our starting back 4 when all fit and firing. £90m on base fees isnt bad money for 75% of a potentially pretty elite back line.

The interesting thing is it seems like Thiaw is “probably” going to cement his place in the starting line up and Botman looks to be getting back to his best. It’ll be interesting to see what Howe does with Burn when Hall is back to full fitness or maybe he’ll be fighting out with Botman for a start

Given Hall doesn't sound quite right yet, it'll likely be Burn at LB for a few games. As soon as Hall is back up to speed, he has a difficult choice to make.

Burn brings great leadership and has barely put a foot wrong for a while now, but Botman is simply a better footballer and improves the way the team play overall.

I think we’ll see more 3 at the back whilst Tino is out and we have 4 top quality CB’s. Which is ok for certain games. But we’ve looked crap playing it. Far more than we’ve looked good, IMO.

The issue we’ve got right now is that with Tino out, we need to manage rests a bit differently.

What happens if we get to a point where both Botman and Trips need a rest at the same time?

That would leave us with either Krafth starting, or Burn at LB, Hall at RB, and one of Thiaw or Schär at LCB (unless one of them is pushed across to RB). It’s definitely better depth than we’ve had in a long time, but we’ve got to be smart with the game time while Tino’s unavailable so it doesn’t turn into a problem.

It hasn't helped we've had a real mix of nonsense in those games mostly.

I would be surprised if it looked as bad with the 4 being Murphy Tonali Bruno and Hall (Joelinton and Ramsey are also fine in this LM spot) and the 3 being Elanga, Woltemade and Gordon.

I wouldn't be surprised to see either Burn LB or Thiaw RB on a fairly regular basis, possibly starting tomorrow

edit - almost going back to the 4-5-1 out of possession, into 3-4-3 in possession

If Hall can do close to 90 it would make sense to play him instead of Burn due to having the next two weeks off unlike Burn who could well be playing twice. Same with Botman.

Edit.... just found out Hall's got an un21 call up.

Is there any world where Howe plays Hall and Trippier in a back 4 through a run of games, or is it just too risky? It would probably put a lot of defensive responsibility on either Bruno or Tonali in that case (and/or our wingers).

Can we all just start spelling his name "CHOW". It would be alot easier for my brain.

Thats no even how its pronounced. Its more like what a cat says with a T instead of the M.

Teaow

Although said quickly it does give that ch sound.
