He has been very good for a while in 2025, but we've kept 4 clean sheets in the league in games where he has played atleast half of it (all of them vs bottom 6 sides). In the first 4 games of the season when he wasn't playing yet, we kept 3 clean sheets. We've never looked rock solid at the back since he came. Ofcourse it's far from just his fault, but I miss the times of Burn and Schar at their peak for us. There was a time where our CBs rarely ever let someone get past them.

I said it in the match thread, but our defensive frailties in general (one game and a half aside) have been nothing to do with him IMO. What more could he do? Probably 75% appearances or more have been 8/10 performances at least.

We don't defend as a unit like we used to. It's just that simple. It stems from the midfield.

The same old problems were there with our midfield 3. Easy to get behind and take them all out with one pass and you’re in on our back 4.

Even factoring that in. He makes some

Bramble’esque decisions. The second Ekitike goal he reminded me of Boumsong and all.

He looks brilliant most the time. But the comments about him having lapses of concentration are starting to look accurate. He was let off against Villa when he failed to cut out a simple through ball and Watkins fucked up a one on one.

He could probably do with a rest and for the most part he’s been great. But that was what, his 4th and 5th clangers that have led to goals this season?

Were they really massive clangers? Or did he just come up against an in form elite level finisher? You know the kind we lost in the summer, who made VVD and Gabriel/Saliba look terrified when he played against them. I think we are just seeing the reason the club went for Ekitike before pivoting to 'he who shall be named' if you ask me.

Would benefit from a rest. He’s played the most football of anyone this season.

He was nowhere near as bad as people are making out, but the signs of some loss of attention have been creeping in across some games recently.

The first one can be categorised as a misread, the second was a clanger, playing it directly to a Liverpool player under no pressure and when he was part of the last line of defence.

Put it in the game thread but 8 times out of 10 he's made the right play for the second goal but diplodocus happened to take 1 of the 2 out of 10 plays that beat it.

Third goal, yeah mistake but not as bad as the one Burn got away with in the second half

Not for me. He got hung out to dry by Trippier. But it felt like he never knew what was behind him. Like he was scared to close the angle too soon because there was maybe a cross on. He can’t have been worried about getting chopped, as he had a decent angle to close him down and hold him up. But just never seemed to want to engage him.

It just seemed really weird and lethargic the way he was ambling back and like he invited Ekitike to do what he did and rushed in when it was too late. Still a top finish/toe punt, mind.

Not his finest hour tonight. That's Leeds and tonight where he's cost us goals but he didn't get away with it this time.

Little bit more understandable when it's Ekitike rather than Dominic Calvert-Lesbian.

You don't have to no further than Trippier for our defensive fraielties. Change this then we move on. That's why Tino is such a miss.

I don't think he was at fault for the second goal, mistakes happened earlier. He could've been a bit closer but it's just boring maths. If you let Ekitike cut in it's a high danger chance, now we were done by a great finish. Third is his fault but those happen when you are trying to play progressive passes and we still had plenty of men behind the ball.

He's the least of our worries, he had lots of brilliant moments too.

Every CB in the world has a mistake in them.

Defenders (and goalkeepers) are defined by their mistakes - all can make them, but the fewer you make the better you are.

The lad looks rick-prone, though I still think Trippier had more to do with the second goal.
